The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It had its big release yesterday, both in theatres and on streaming service HBO Max where it will be available for a month. Directed by Michael Chaves, the film is the latest installment in James Wan’s famed horror franchise, which looks into the case files of renowned paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren.
Although the previous films focused on haunted houses and demonic, ghostly entities as the tormentors, The Conjuring 3 takes a much different turn. So, who’s the real enemy in the new movie? Let’s take a look.
Who Is the Real Villain in Conjuring 3?
The Devil Made Me Do It is based on the 1981 murder trial of Arne Cheyenne Johnson, who pled not guilty in the murder of his neighbor and claimed defense of demonic possession. However, it is just one of the two cases the Warrens deal with in the movie and both lead them to The Occultist, who serves as the main antagonist of Conjuring 3.
Unlike the villains in past films, The Occultist is very much alive and plans to wreak havoc, which makes her a terrifying adversary who can also be quite unpredictable. Kastner reveals she is his daughter, and her real name is Isla.
Ed and Lorraine’s further investigation unveils that their initial beliefs of a demonic possession causing harm to David and Arne were misled, and it was Isla who had cursed them by placing a witch’s totem underneath the Glatzel’s home. They later discover that she had made a deal with an inhuman spirit, and to fulfil that bargain, she required three people: the child (Jessica), the lover (Arne), and the man of God (Ed) to take the lives of three people individually before committing suicide.
To save her soul, she was willing to sacrifice them and their victims who were first killed by Jessica and Arne. Ed, too, attempted to kill Lorraine while under the demon’s possession but nearly avoided doing so thanks to their deep connection.
The Occultist chose her three victims because of their proximity to where she operated from and not because she had any deep attachment to them. Her ulterior motive to spread chaos did not require her to be selective rather only to ensure she hurt enough people.
However, the Warrens successfully thwarted her evil plans and destroyed the altar, thus breaking the curse and ultimately killing her.
Although The Occultist’s story might seem riveting to audiences, she is not a real person and was devised by the creators to serve as the film’s main villain. But considering her death at the end, The Occultist’s chapter is most likely concluded.

The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It (or The Conjuring 3) is a 2021 American supernatural horror film directed by Michael Chaves. It serves as a sequel to 2016’s The Conjuring 2 and is the eighth film in The Conjuring Universe franchise.
Cast members include Vera Farmiga, Patrick Wilson, Ruairi O’Connor, John Noble, Julian Hilliard and Sterling Jerins among many others.
DC Comics will release a prequel series, The Conjuring: The Lover, with The Conjuring 2 scribe David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick co-writing the series.
The film had its release in theatres on June 4, 2021 and will be available on HBO Max for one month.
