The Fallout: Exploring Gen Z’s Way of Coping with Traumatizing School Shootings

Megan Park’s directorial debut, The Fallout, released an emotional, dramatic trailer on January 18.

The highly acclaimed movie stars Jenna Ortega and Maddie Zieglar in life-changing roles as teenagers who experienced school shootings and survived, with the burden of not knowing how to live.

With background music that rises towards the end, The Fallout trailer shows the journey of pre and post-trauma of two teenagers and the people around them.

The trailer opens with an ordinary scene in any high school—two girls talking, complimenting each other in the washroom. Two gunshots and a few screams later, the girls’ lives are turned upside down as they struggle to cope with the horrifying incident and mental health issues such as anxiety, insomnia, and numbness creeping in.

Ortega as Vada Cavell and Zieglar as Mia Reed are being applauded for their incredible acting. The movie is said to showcase both the actress’ finest acting, setting high expectations.

The heart-wrenching movie won the Audience Award for Narrative Feature at the 2021 SXSW Film Festival and was called “the first defining movie of Gen Z” by Matt Oakes of Silver Screen Riot.

The Fallout shows not only the physical aftermath (in one scene, students stand in a queue to get scanned at the school gates) but also the emotional turmoil Gen Z has had to grow up with, with rare representation on screens.

Megan Park’s award-winning directorial debut puts the spotlight on them, as viewers take a journey of accepting, acknowledging, and coping with the trauma, together with the characters.

The Fallout will premiere exclusively on HBO Max on January 27.
