Michael Keaton Reveals Why He Returned as Batman in The Flash

Michael Keaton starred in Batman (1989) and Batman Returns (1992) as the wealthy socialite Bruce Wayne, who turns into Gotham’s vigilante savior Batman when the Bat-Signal shines in the sky. The actor returns to the big screen as Batman in the upcoming 2023 DC film, The Flash, 30 years after he last put on the suit and mask of Gotham’s superhero.

The Flash, directed by Andy Muschietti, will premiere in theaters on June 23, 2023, and is set in the DCEU following the story of Barry Allen, a.k.a. The Flash, who was first introduced in the 2017 film Justice League. The film will show the speedster’s origin in brief and how his timeline starts to crack and change when he returns in time to save his mother from being murdered and his father arrested.

The film opens up the possibility of DC’s very own multiverse since both Ben Affleck, who has played the DCEU’s Batman in previous films, and Michael Keaton will be playing Batman’s role in the 2023 film.

Apart from the two Batmen, the film also stars Ezra Miller as The Flash/Barry Allen, Ron Livingston as Henry Allen (Barry’s father), Maribel Verdu as Nora Allen (Barry’s mother), Kiersey Clemons as Iris West (Barry’s love interest), Michael Shannon as General Zod (Man Of Steel), Antje Traue as Faura-Ul (Man of Steel), and Sasha Calle as Supergirl.

In an interview with Variety, Michael Keaton shares that his curiosity and excitement to join a big superhero universe like the DCEU finally encouraged him to return to the role again. He also wanted to see if he could “pull off” playing the caped crusader one more time after three long decades.

The writing was actually really good! So, I thought, why not? It’s cool to drop in, and I’m curious to see if I can pull it off.

Keaton also shared his excitement to join the DCEU, which looked “gigantic” and exciting as an “outsider,” and he was intrigued at playing the hero in the DCEU.

I was curious what it would be like after this many years. Not so much me doing it—obviously, some of that —but I was just curious about it, weirdly, socially. This whole thing is gigantic. They have their entirely own world. So, I like to look at it as an outsider, thinking, ‘Holy moly!’

Keaton also mentioned that at first, he had joined the DCEU “just for fun,” but being a part of it has been grander and more nostalgic than he expected. Fans can rest easy with these answers, since Keaton has not returned to the superhero scene simply for fan service or nostalgia but to add more to the hero.
