The Mystery of the Bridgerton Children’s Alphabetical Names

If you have caught on to the Bridgerton fever, you will have probably noticed the little things about the fantastic period piece- like how the Bridgerton children are all named alphabetically. The eight children of Violet Bridgerton and Edmund Bridgerton are Anthony, Benedict, Colin, Daphne, Eloise, Francesca, Gregory and Hyacinth. Why are the siblings so named?

The Netflix drama is based on Regency-era expert Julia Quinn’s book series of the same name. The show revolves around the tight-knit Bridgerton clan and the lives of those around them. Although the books mention a lot more about the Bridgertons’ unusual choice, the show provides a sprinkling of reason here and there.

From the scandal sheets, it is very clear that Lady Whistledown detests how the siblings have been named. She says that it is a sign of their “banality” and is a shallow way of trying to make the family unique, which is a great requirement in the Social Season since all eight children look very similar to one another.

But there is a more practical reason behind the tradition. According to Violet Bridgerton, her husband and she wanted to approach the situation in an “orderly” way. Who can blame them? Keeping track of eight children, all of whom look very much like the next person, can be really hard!

It seems like the Bridgertons started a trend! Without spoiling the finale, the tradition has caught on very well with the next generation.
