Sony’s upcoming Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City is reviving the Resident Evil film franchise. And in true spirit of the franchise, director Johannes Roberts has promised that the film will be a horror movie.
Whenever a movie doesn’t shy from showing blood splashing with guts and gore (and zombies), you can bet it’s destined to be rated R.
According to Bloody Disgusting, the MPA officially announced that Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City has received an R-rating for “Strong violence and gore, and language throughout.”
Resident Evil films are no strangers to the R-rating as all of them earned it for ‘strong violence.’ However, Welcome to Raccoon City will supposedly be way gorier than those that came before.
While talking to IGN, Roberts explained how his film will be different from the Milla Jovovich ones,
This movie really had nothing to do with the previous franchise. This was all about returning to the games and creating a movie that was much more a horror movie than the sort of sci-fi action of the previous films. I was hugely influenced in particular by the remake of the second game and I really wanted to capture the atmosphere-drenched tone that it had. It was so cinematic.
Robers also mentioned that his film will be ‘dark and grimy, entirely shot at night,’ and credits movies like The Exorcist, Don’t Look Now, and The Shining as his prime influences.
The director also worked with Capcom for the film’s development and designs,
We worked very closely with Capcom. Every character and creature is from the game, and as such, I wanted to be as faithful as possible. I wanted to create a truly immersive feeling for the fans.
The film’s dark and gory theme is evident in the recent first look photos released by IGN.

Returning to the terrifying roots of the massively popular franchise, fan and filmmaker Johannes Roberts brings the games of the billion-dollar franchise and the most successful video game adaptation in history to life for a whole new generation of fans.
Once the booming home of pharmaceutical giant Umbrella Corporation, Raccoon City is now a dying Midwestern town. The company’s exodus left the city a wasteland…with great evil brewing below the surface. When that evil is unleashed, the townspeople are forever…changed…and a small group of survivors must work together to uncover the truth behind Umbrella and make it through the night.
The cast includes Kaya Scodelario, Hannah John-Kamen, Robbie Amell, Tom Hopper, Avan Jogia, and Neal McDonough.
Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City will be out in theaters on November 24, 2021.
