The Orville S3: Is the Union-Krill enmity over for good?

In the last few episodes of The Orville S2, the Union and the Krill have decided to patch their relationship, as per the saying “my enemy’s enemy is my friend,” in order to defeat their common adversary, the Kaylons.

As we open up with S3, their peace treaty is still intact and functional. But the question is for how long? Will the Union and the Krill continue to be on good terms after the Kaylon battle is over?

The Union and the Krill have signed the Lak’vai Pact of Tarazed 3, which paves way for a more permanent form of a peace treaty and ensures amiable relationships between the two parties for an extensive period of time. However, the outcome of the Kaylon Battle may be the last deciding factor.

Tensions are still high between the Union and the Krill, as we see in S3 Ep 2, where the former has to ask for permission through diplomatic channels to explore the Kalarr Expanse. The Krill warn against it, but the Union’s Orville crew go forth anyway and end up getting contaminated by a virus.

While in the big picture, this little instance isn’t all that important, it goes to show how there’s not a lot of trust between the two. Of course, it is difficult to trust the Krill, given that their whole ideology is a fanatic, fatalistic hostility against all non-Krill life forms (painfully similar to what the Kaylons are practicing).

So in such a stalemate, can the two really find a place to develop peaceful relationship?

Signing the Lak’vai Pact does not account for much, but at least it shows that the Krill may be open to peaceful relationships even after the Kaylon threat is over. On the other hand, this could just be a tactical move where they use the Union, and then eliminate them after they’ve finished off the Kaylons.

As a sucker for a sappy story, I’m hoping for a peace treaty — Not something that’s immediate, but rather gradual and well-drawn out. After all, we do know that the Krill were not this aggressive before they left their own planet. It was only the discovery of the existence of innumerable species that made their head turn in the wrong way.

Besides this, there’s not much more we do know about them as a species — not much about their history, culture or even about how much the average Krill agrees with their religious doctrine.

A few fans are hoping that the Krill will challenge their existing religion, to open up possibilities of peace not just with the Union, but other planets/species as well.

Of course, since both the parties are bang in the middle of conflict, there may be some (Kaylon) twists and turns waiting that may drive a wedge between the two once again.

The Union-Krill relationship status will only be decided once the Kaylon conflict ends. Till then, it’s complicated.
