Episode 6 had given Alan hope of finally escaping, the prison, that this therapy with his latest patient had become. And all through episode 7, Alan held on to the hope of eventually being free of this nightmare.
Thus, to distract himself, he goes into his mind and, in his session with his dead therapist, he explores the reasons behind the strenuous relationship he has with his son after Beth’s death. But at the end of the episode, Sam shatters Alan’s hopes, explaining how his note will never be discovered.
Will Alan be Sam’s prisoner forever or will he replace Alan after what he feels are futile therapy sessions? Will that mean Alan’s number is up?

Alan waits in anticipation of his rescue while his sub-conscious manifests in the form of his dead therapist urging him to mend his relationship with Ezra.
Meanwhile, Sam is pursuing an old school counselor to find someone else who can cure him as he loses faith in Dr. Strauss’ capability of healing him.
Alan confesses that he has forgotten the words of the Kaddish, and Sam goes out of his way to get a printout of the prayer for him.
As he is commending Sam for his first step towards healing, he realizes that Sam has not placed Elias’ body somewhere it could be found, thus all his hopes expire. While he reads the Kaddish, he is torn between the grief for his dead wife and the fear of his imminent death.
