Hollywood Insider Discloses Why DC Dropped Henry Cavill’s Superman

Weeks after the release of Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam, Henry Cavill took to social media in mid-October 2022 to confirm his return as the DCU’s Superman after the studio greenlit future roles.

But now, only two months after his return announcement, Cavill visited Instagram to drop the bomb that newly appointed DC Studios CEOs Peter Safran and James Gunn have a different vision for Superman in mind for the DCU’s future. Cavill bid farewell to the role with a heavy heart, wishing the studio best of luck on their conquest.

The official story is that Gunn and Safran’s Superman reboot planned an introduction of a younger Superman, due to which Cavill was dropped. The plans Cavill established in October were with the studio before Gunn and Safran’s appointment, and since a new universe will be formed, the aforementioned plans were bound to change.

But a Hollywood insider has now explained in The Hollywood Reporter’s report that Cavill’s re-appointment as Superman was just a “pawn” in “Dwayne’s failed attempt” to control a piece of DC and the extended universe.

In the end, he was a pawn in Dwayne’s failed attempt to control a piece of DC.

The insider’s comment obviously hints at Dwayne Johnson’s consistent fight with the then DC Studios head executives to make sure Henry Cavill’s Superman would return in Black Adam. Johnson’s vision included Superman extensively beyond the 2022 film, with a possible Black Adam V Superman film in the mix.

Johnson’s involvement in the anti-hero’s film and the fact that his tactics brought Cavill back as Superman guarantees there’s undoubtedly some truth to the insider’s statement.

Fans had taken to blame Safran and Gunn for baiting Cavill to take the role to boost Black Adam’s sales and then cutting him off even after he allegedly dropped The Witcher to fit Superman into his schedule. Gunn simply stated the decision to bring him back was before his time and that a clean slate for the DCU to start afresh is necessary.

Cavill’s involvement with Man of Steel 2 and his cameo in the 2023 film,The Flash has also been cut. What do you make of this new information pertaining to Cavill’s sudden goodbye?
