The School for Good and Evil Ending: Who wins? Good or Evil?

Netflix’s latest fantasy film, The School for Good and Evil, has laid out the importance of co-existence of good and evil and the necessary balance that grants meaning and order to chaos.

Neither Good prevailed nor did Evil win but order was restored.

Sophie and Agatha lived an ordinary life, but Sophie wanted more. When they were transported to another realm split between good and evil, neither one wanted to go back to their monotonous life but to a place where they belonged.

Sophie and Agatha were separated into different schools of Good and Evil and this was Justified during the Trial by Tale. Harry Potter’s Triwizard Tournament appeared in my mind when Tedros and Sophie traipsed through the dark forest to prove their love. Good Agatha helped Evil Sophie throughout the challenge, but Sophie didn’t save Tedros, establishing her evil core.

Before we come to the film’s ending, we’d like to clear up one other question fans had after the movie. Why do you think Agatha’s colors never changed when Sophie’s spell forced the Nevers and Evers to exchange themes?

Agatha remained dressed in the colors of Good because she remained adamant throughout the film that the world was not divided in black and white but shades of grey. She cannot believe Sophie is simply evil, and her belief is the lesson that the film delivers to its viewers.

Sophie saving Agatha, in the end, proves her ability to be good, breaking Rafal’s spell and proving that her core is not as rotten as the Chaotic magic wielder’s.

Even the film’s happy ending was foreshadowed when Agatha made a wish to the Wish Fish. The scene undoubtedly highlighted her empathetic selflessness, but her wish for everyone to find their home is what brought Sophie and Agatha back to each other’s side.

The ending also strengthens the message of true friendship and the love Sophie and Agatha have for each other, as Agatha’s tears are what save Sophie from a certain death. Apart from that, throughout the film, the fact that there must be a balance between good and evil is reinforced.

The Netflix film’s last scene even sets up the possibility of a sequel as Tedros arrow pierces the vortex Sophie and Agatha open to return to the realm of mortals. Tedros declares he needs Agatha, revealing that “this is only the beginning.”
