The Ultimate Guide To Streaming Every Oscar 2022 Nominee

The 94th Academy Awards, popularly known as Oscars 2022 is round the corner and the Academy recently dropped the nominations for different categories.

If you’re a film buff, cinephile or simply want to check out the Oscar nominees before the big night, you’re at the right place.

To make life easier for us and other cinephiles around, I have put together a list of streaming services where you can watch the 2022 Oscar nominees. From Dune to Licorice Pizza, the list is pretty long.

But there’s a reason why the Oscars are such a big deal, isn’t there? So, if you haven’t already watched them, here’s you chance to experience some great cinema. Also, it will make watching the Oscars and live tweeting about it more fun if you know stuff about the movies.

While many of the Oscar nominated films are available to watch for free if you have the concerned subscription to the streaming service, some are not directly available to stream.

They are instead available to rent or buy through one platform or the other. So, there’s always a way.

For your information, the 94th Academy Awards will be held on 27th March, 2022 at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood and air on ABC from 8 pm ET.

1. Ascension

Ascension is an observational documentary by Jessica Kingdon, focusing on the Chinese economy at large. It also deals with topics such as the blue-collar workers and the Chinese middle-class among others.

It is a good look on contemporary Chinese politics, economy and the social structure as well. Recommended if you’re into documentaries or want to watch something educational.

2. Attica

Another Academy nominated documentary to catch up on would be Stanley Nelson’s Attica. In its 50th anniversary, Attica narrates the tale of the famous prison rebellion.

What makes it more interesting is that the film was made based on the experiences, opinions and anecdotes shared by people who experienced it themselves.

3. Belfast

Kenneth Branagh’s masterpiece is set in Northern Ireland and captures a period of severe political and religious turbulence. Inspired by his own childhood, the film follows the story of a young boy’s childhood days during The Troubles.

4. Being the Ricardos

Directed by Aaron Sorkin, this film is a must watch for incredible performances by the cast. It is pretty evident from the categories this film has been nominated for.

The film tells the story of Hollywood power couple Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz as they work their way through personal and professional obstacles and ups and downs in their relationship.

5. CODA

The Sian Heder film is a feel-good slice of life which revolves around a family where every member is deaf, except the 17-year-old daughter, Ruby. The story takes a leap when Ruby discovers a passion for singing.

6. Don’t Look Up

I am sure if there’s one film you’ve heard of in this list, it must be this one. The film consists of an all-star cast featuring Leonardo DiCaprio, Jennifer Lawrence, Jonah Hill, Timothee Chalamet, Meryl Streep and Cate Blanchett.

The film itself is a satire on climate change and political crisis where an approaching comet is heading towards the Earth and might destroy it.

6. Drive My Car

Japanese director Ryusuke Hamaguchi is back with a sombre drama which deals with relationships and emotions, love, loss and life in his own beautiful way.

I recommend this to avid readers or literature enthusiasts as well, since the film is based on a short story by Haruki Murakami.

8. Dune

Denis Villeneuve’s magnum-opus based on Frank Herbert’s 1965 sci-fi novel has grabbed quite a few eyeballs and also features an ensemble cast with the likes of Timothee Chalamet, Zendaya, Jason Momoa, Oscar Isaac and Rebecca Ferguson.

The film is worth a watch if you are into sci-fi or fantasy in general or want some stellar set design, cinematography, action and costume design.

9. Encanto

On a sad afternoon, nothing feels better than a classic Disney musical. Encanto is just that, with a stellar original album by Lin-Manuel Miranda.

The story revolves around a Columbian teenager who has to save the magic of her extended family though she has no powers of her fun. Don’t skip this heart-warming beauty at any cost, no matter how old you are.

10. The Eyes of Tammy Faye

Nominations – Best actress (Jessica Chastain), best makeup and hairstyling

Adapted from a 2000 documentary, the film focuses on Tammy Faye, the televangelist and her rise and fall along with her million-dollar empire. Watch the film particularly for Chastain’s performance.

11. Flee

Flee is a distinctive story of a refugee using collages of animation and newsreel clips and footage following a man’s painful and traumatic journey to find a place he can call home. Riz Ahmed and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau are executive producers of the film.

12. The Hand of God

Italian director Paulo Sorrentino’s The Hand of God is a memorable look at Naples, the city he grew up in, with a focus on the 1980s.

13. King Richard

19. Nightmare Alley

Disney is now further expanding its diversity by including characters from various races and colors, so we are getting more inclusive work from the house.

Raya and the Last Dragon, inspired by South Asian quest adventure trope is a delight to watch with Awkwafina and Kelly Marie Tran lending their voices to the characters.

23. Spencer

24. West Side Story
