The Witcher: Blood Origin, Introducing New Characters

This Christmas, Netflix has got us talking about the birth of a fictional hero. Releasing The Witcher: Blood Origin on December 25, 2022, the streaming platform took us back 1200 years from The Witcher series, showing us the creation of the first titular magical creature.

Lots of new faces were introduced in the prequel series consisting of four episodes, detailing the formation of the first Witcher, exploring the Elven civilizations before its imminent demise, and explaining the events leading to the Conjugation of the Spheres. But who plays who in the latest facet of the famous fantasy series?

Let’s take you on an introductory tour of the cast and character in The Witcher: Blood Origin!

Like Henry Cavill’s Geralt is the face of the original series, Sophia Brown’s Éile is the main lead of the prequel. Once a part of the Raven clan, which protected the Elven royalty of Pryshia, Éile departs from her duties to pursue her musical tendencies around the Continent.

But of course, once chaos breaks out upon the fictional landmass, Éile’s dreams are put on hold as a new destiny calls out to her. Sophia Brown’s depiction of the Lark has been commended throughout reviews of the newly released series.

While we’re talking about a shunned warrior, let’s meet the Dog Clan’s black sheep Fjall, who sworn to protect Xintr’ean princess Merwyn but was removed from his duties after he failed his oath by sleeping with her. Fjall ended up as the prequel’s guinea pig, becoming the first Witcher prototype, the origin of the bloodline from where Geralt of Ritvia hails.

Played by Laurence O’Fuarain, who we know from Game of Thrones, Into the Badlands, and The Vikings, Fjall has an enemies-to-lovers-like romance with Éile, serving as a highlight in the otherwise intense fantasy show.

Éile’s mentor and the last survivor of the Ghost Tribe, Michelle Yeoh’s Scían, is one of the show’s high-profile characters. Her duties as Éile’s master may have been for naught after the musician decided to leave her warrior duties, but the last sword-elf’s quest to find and restore the Soulreaver will not follow the same result.

All of these new characters must have been interesting to know, but let’s visit one we’ve seen before in The Witcher and one we might see in the upcoming seasons of the original series on Netflix.

Joey Batey reprises his role as Jaskier, who we know as Geralt’s closest friend and ally in The Witcher. He is called upon by Seanchai, played by Minnie Driver, the mysterious storyteller who lives to tell the tale of the Seven and spread it across the continent. After their short stint in the prequel, the two are slated to reprise their roles in the upcoming seasons of the original series.

Let’s get back to the Seven now and resume the introduction with the lovers, warrior Brother Death and sorceress Zacaré, played by Huw Novelli (The Snow Spider) and Lizzie Annis (Crush Hour: A Musical). The couple plays a pivotal role in the fall of the Golden Empire and the creation of the first Witcher in the prequel.

Speaking of the Golden Empire, here’s the main antagonist of The Witcher: Blood Origin, the conniving Xintr’ean Princess Merwyn, played by Sex Education actress Mirren Mack. The princess’s deceptive looks help her get away with her devious plans, and the ruthless character uses her knowledge of the past to foreshadow The Witcher’s Nilfgaardian Empire.

We also meet the Dwarven warrior Meldof, an assassin who works her hammer into creating bloody works and helps the seven on their quest to thwart the Golden Empire.

The Witcher: Blood Origin introduces Eredin, played by Jacob Collins-Levy who you may remember seeing in The White Princess, who the games’ fans will recognize as the main antagonist in the third entry. He wasn’t corrupted in the prequel, but his path down the darkness was teased after his appointment as the Royal Guard’s captain.

The Witcher and its new prequel series heavily rest upon the magical lore of the Monoliths that changed the Continent’s future forever. So, let’s delve next into the wizards who started the Conjugation of Spheres with their respective magics steeped in Order and Chaos.

Balor and Syndrill

Zach Wyatt, who we’ve seen before in Timestalker, takes on the role of Syndril, a powerful eleven mage whose magic is the key to allowing travel through space and time. His monolith power resided upon the pillars of Order, but Lenny Harry’s Balor sullies it with Chaos magic for the Golden Empire’s needs.

Together the two wizards, without meaning to, set upon the beginning of the Conjugation of Spheres which implies in a thousand years or so, the geographical and social build-up of the Continent will be entirely different – as we’ve seen in The Witcher.

The Witcher: Blood Origin is currently streaming on Netflix, so go meet all these new characters and learn all about their destinies.
