Thor: Love and Thunder Ending Justifies Its Unique Title

The ending of Thor: Love and Thunder, currently running in theaters, seems to have justified its unique title quite well.

The film traces Thor’s journey after the catastrophic events of Avengers: Endgame. Taika Waititi earlier described Thor’s situation in the film as a “mid-life crisis”. The film also marks the return of Jane Foster aka Mighty Thor and Valkyrie, now the King of Asgard.

The movie also introduces Christian Bale’s Gorr, the God Butcher, who is the main antagonist in the film. Thus, though Thor was meant to search for peace in Love and Thunder, he was not able to retire from fighting altogether.

Gorr

We saw Love, Gorr’s daughter, dying in the opening moments of the film. Even after pleading to his God to save her life, he was unable to save her. Gorr then decided to kill all the gods as revenge for his daughter’s death.

At the end of Thor: Love and Thunder, there are two major deaths, that of Gorr and Jane Foster. As claimed by previously speculated plotlines, the ending is not a completely happy one.

This ending justified the film’s title, ‘Love and Thunder’ as it is a reference to Gorr’s daughter, Love. The ‘thunder’ refers to Thor himself, since he is the God of Thunder.

In the end, Thor is able to convince Gorr to choose love over revenge. While Gorr originally wanted to ask for all gods to be killed, but Thor convinces him to ask for his daughter to be resurrected instead, so he can be reunited with her.

Though Gorr considers Thor’s option, he feels that since he is dying due to prolonged use of the Necrosword, his daughter would be left an orphan even if she were to be resurrected. However, Mighty Thor convinces Gorr that this would not be the case.

In the final moments of the film, Thor promises Gorr to take care of his daughter, after which Gorr dies. Thor keeps his promise and takes care of Love. As Eternity’s child, Love herself is also god-like.

We see Thor making pancakes for his new-found daughter, and the two going into battle together. Love is seen yielding the Stormbreaker while Thor carries his trusted hammer, Mjolnir.

So, the title refers to Thor’s newfound connection to Love, who is now his daughter. ‘Love and Thunder’ thus refers to the beginning of a new journey for the God of Thunder, who transforms from ‘sad-God’ to ‘dad-God’, as aptly put by Korg.

The film does not end with the ending, as is customary with any MCU movie. There are two post-credits scenes, one of which introduces Hercules into the MCU and the other features Jane Foster being welcomed by Heimdall in Valhalla.

Although Chris Hemsworth earlier hinted that Love and Thunder could be his last MCU movie, there’s still hope of Thor returning, considering the hints that the ending gave us, with him starting a new chapter in his life as a father. The rest is for us to wait and watch.
