Thor Sets out to Discover Himself in Love and Thunder Trailer

High-five if you watched Thor: Love and Thunder’s trailer a couple of times just because of how snazzy it is! I wasn’t even doing it to read into any clues or Easter eggs. Thor has had three standalone movies and quite a few shared performances, all of which have added to the captivating character growth of the Asgardian god.

As the trailer literally has Thor run through various phases of his life, we see snippets of his journey thus far—a snarky, thunderous hero, a prince burdened with responsibility, and an Avenger who lost all his loved ones.

It is no wonder that Thor is questioning who he really is and what lies ahead for him.

As much as I could gush over how pure and endearing this trailer is, I must break down some really important bits that you may or may not have missed. Let me start with the most important one.

The Villain Is Missing

The trailer conveniently does not mention Christian Bale’s Gorr the God Butcher at all! Or, any villain/threats for that matter.

But don’t let the happy, coming-of-age trailer deceive you—this movie is actually about how Thor gets a team assembled to take down Gorr, an alien supervillain who is on a crusade to kill all gods with a special weapon he acquired. Gorr grew up on a barren planet that was neglected by the gods, and now has decided to be their comeuppance.

But just because we don’t see him in the trailer, doesn’t mean his presence isn’t implied in other ways.

Falligar the Behemoth

This image above from the trailer is an exact replica of a scene from the comics Thor: God of Thunder #3. Lying dead is the god Falligar the Behemoth, whom Thor finds deceased when he’s trying to track down Gorr.

Looks like Gorr is going to leave a shocking body count for Thor to discover in the movie as well. This brings us to…

Zeus in Olympus

2022 is all about the gods! First, we meet the Egyptian kind in Moon Knight and now, the Greek kind in Thor 4. Of course, we’re not here just to admire the scenery. We’re here because one god, in particular, may be in big trouble.

The trailer keeps Russell Crowe’s face hidden for now, but that golden lightning bolt is a dead giveaway for all-things-Zeus. I always assumed that Zeus would be the one to visit Thor and inform him about Gorr’s foul plans. I stand corrected as it seems to be the other way around.

PS: Can we please get Hercules on board, too?

The Mighty Thor

With the way the trailer was trying to be secretive about all the important plotlines, I did not expect to see that powerful, final shot of Natalie Portman as the Mighty Thor. What a way to end an already perfect trailer!

Also, what I love about this shot (besides the winged helmet) is the fact that she is wielding a broken Mjolnir that is pieced together by cosmic energy. That hammer has so much history to it and having Jane pick it up to create new legacies is simply stellar.

Thor definitely needs her on his team if he wants to defeat Gorr.

Miscellaneous Easter Eggs

  • Did you get a peek at a young Thor in the Jack Kirby costume? This is just one of the many Thor costumes shown off in the trailer. My personal favorite has to be the Ravager Thor. Yup, that one with the red jacket.
  • Thor is working on shedding some weight with motivation from a “Strongest Avenger” cap.
  • Thor “buries” the Stormbreaker as a symbolic gesture of him trying to deal with all the Thanos trauma.
  • Remember how Thor lost his eye fighting Hela, and then Rocket gave him a bionic eye in Infinity War? It seems like Thor has somehow fixed his eyes to how they naturally were.
  • While Valkyrie makes for a good ruler and an even greater warrior, her bored looks tell us that she doesn’t particularly enjoy diplomatic entertainment.
  • This is a big win for die-hard comic book fans: the Goat Boat!
  • It’s no surprise that the GOTG gang is here. Thor did take off in their ship in the final minutes of Endgame. If memory serves right, Thor’s relationship with Star-Lord was quite rocky as he tried to assert dominance as captain. So why is the God of Thunder making googly, love-eyes at Quill now in Love and Thunder?

About Thor: Love and Thunder

Thor: Love and Thunder is a MCU movie and the fourth installation in the Thor series. It is directed by Ragnarok’s director, Taika Waititi, and will show Chris Hemsworth and Natalie Portman reprising their roles as Thor Odinson and Dr. Jane Foster.

The movie will be based on The Mighty Thor comics in which Thor Odinson loses the ability to lift Mjolnir, and Jane Foster takes on the role of Mighty Thor. After the events of Avengers: Endgame, Thor teams up with The Guardians of the Galaxy for a short time, leaving Valkyrie as the ruler of New Asgard. But Thor returns to team up with Korg, Valkyrie and Jane’s Mighty Thor to take down Gorr the God Butcher (Christian Bale) – before he takes out all the gods in existence.

Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson return for Watiti’s second go, while Russell Crowe and Natalie Portaman join Taika’s project for the first time. The movie is out on July 8, 2022.
