Tom Holland’s Spider-Man Contract Ends after ‘No Way Home’

Tom Holland’s contract to play Spider-Man ends after Jon Watts’ Spider-Man: No Way Home is released at the end of 2021.

Tom Holland has been making the press rounds endorsing his recent movie Cherry, with directors Joe and Anthony Russo. Recently, during an interview with USA Today, when asked what he has scheduled next, he said:

“I’m going to take a break and travel the world. It’s the first time since I signed on to (Spider-Man) that I don’t have a contract with someone. I might go skiing because that’s something I’ve not really been allowed to do because it’s obviously a dangerous sport. I’ve been very careful over the years, which is why I’ve become obsessed with golf because it’s the only sport I can play without getting injured.”

Holland said in the same interview that he would be happy to play the character in ten more Spider-Man movies.

The actor’s initial contract was said to stretch over six movies. Holland made his MCU debut in 2016’s Captain America: Civil War, followed by 2017’s Spider-Man: Homecoming, before which he starred in Avengers: Infinity War. He then returned in 2019’s Avengers: Endgame, with Spider-Man: Far From Home following that summer. After starring in the new Spider-Man: No Way Home, his original six-movie contract will be fulfilled.

Though Holland’s contract ends with Spider-Man: No Way Home, that doesn’t guarantee it’s the end for Peter Parker. Disney and Sony have somehow succeeded in finding a way to work together on this character. Back in 2019, Holland made numerous requests to Disney chairman and CEO Bob Iger and Sony film chairman Tom Rothman to find a common ground, less than six weeks after a very public breakup. Keeping in mind the successful partnership between Marvel Studios and Sony in launching the hero, there’s a fair possibility that he’ll be called back to reprise the role. This is particularly probable since he’s supposed to serve as one of the poster characters of MCU following the Infinity Saga.

It’s uncertain for the time being if there’s another solo adventure for him. Starring him as a high school student gives Marvel Studios a sea of opportunities to continue narrating his story. Nonetheless, he can always pop in and be included in their future ensemble endeavors.
