In 2022, viewers got a sequel of a classic film, Top Gun (1986), and now 2023 has another nostalgic callback slated, with Reese Witherspoon returning to play the legendary Elle Woods in Legally Blonde 3.
Legally Blonde (2001) followed the story of beauty with brains, Elle Woods, who gets into Harvard Law School to reignite flames with her ex-boyfriend Warner. But once she proves herself as an up-and-coming law student, she realizes she doesn’t need his love and instead moves forward in her career.
The feminist undertones of the film, coupled with the iconic character of Elle Woods, skyrocketed the film’s success and popularity with a big box office collection. Only two years later, a sequel followed in 2003, along with musicals and spinoffs owing to the grand success of the movie.
The 2003 sequel followed Elle’s journey after Harvard Law School in Congress, where she, once again, had to prove that her beauty was not her redeeming quality. The sequel received some criticism, and a third film was not actualized till two decades passed. Now, Legally Blonde 3 is officially in production!
Fans of the Legally Blonde films are waiting in anticipation for the sequel, which is set to release sometime in 2023. Witherspoon has already confirmed her return, and Selma Blair has also shown interest in being included in the upcoming project, reprising her role as Vivian Kingston.
Mindy Kaling has been hired at the writer’s seat for Legally Blonde 3. Coming to the main topic at hand, Witherspoon spoke with USA Today and shared that it was Top Gun: Maverick that inspired the writing of Legally Blonde 3 and how to go ahead with the story 20 years later.
It’s just like ‘Top Gun’: They waited a long time to make another version of that movie, and I loved the nostalgia piece they incorporated into it. So definitely, that gave us a lot of inspiration about what we would want to do with Elle Woods and make sure that we had all those same touchstones that mattered to people back then.
Despite the surprising source of inspiration, the two movies are widely similar. Top Gun 2 was released more than 30 years after the previous one and added to the story while respecting the characters and stories explored earlier, making for a perfect blend of fresh input and nostalgic moments.
Witherspoon hopes the creators at Legally Blonde 3 hope to follow the example of the Top Gun sequel and bring to life a new journey for the beloved Elle Woods while mixing in callbacks and memories of the 2000s.
