Top Gun: Maverick and Other Paramount Films Being Pushed to May 2022

Paramount is setting back Top Gun: Maverick starring Tom Cruise to May 27, 2022, instead of being released this year in November.

The studio has stated that this decision has been made after consulting with experts and their global team. Indeed, data shows US movie watchers’ declining interest in seeing films in theatres. Globally, many countries are either operating at lower capacities or shut altogether.

With the uncertainty of how the Delta variant will play out, Paramount has expressed wanting to give filmmakers and talent a deserving chance at the box office. This can only be possible if the movies are pushed back.

Hence, Top Gun: Maverick is not the only Paramount movie being rescheduled; another Cruise headliner Mission: Impossible 7, along with Jackass Forever and Clifford the Big Red Dog are also being pulled out.

Clifford, as of yet, does not have a rescheduled date, but Jack Forever and Mission: Impossible 7 have been slated for February 4 and September 30, 2022, respectively.

This will leave Paramount with no movie releases for the rest of 2021.

The original Top Gun celebrated its 35th anniversary in May 2021. This would’ve made it an opportune year to release Maverick which serves as its sequel.

Despite received mixed reviews, Top gun was a box office success — even in the face of being released a week before Memorial Day weekend, which many thought was unwise. Perhaps Top Gun: Maverick is simply going to continue the tradition as its May 2022 date also falls around Memorial Day.

Paramount has retitled the 2019-released trailer to reflect the movie’s 2022 release. Watch the trailer:

45 days after its theatrical release, Top Gun: Maverick will also be available on Paramount+.
