‘Top Gun’ Will Be Back in Theaters to Celebrate 35th Anniversary

Tom Cruise’s landmark airforce film Top Gun will be making a return to theaters on May 13 for its 35th-anniversary celebration. Also known as Top Gun Day, May 13 is the day when the movie was released in 1986 and followed Cruise’s Maverick, a fighter pilot, and his partner, Goose, as they are offered an opportunity to train at San Diego’s Navy Fighter Weapons School.

Top Gun was previously re-released in 2013 for a theatrical run spanning six days in IMAX 3D and now, eight years later, is making another comeback on May 13 at AMC Theaters. The movie will be presented in the chain’s Dolby Cinema auditoriums in Dolby Vision.

Collider reports that to ensure viewers get the best cinematic experience, the new release will be featured with Dolby Atmos audio. Other than its upcoming re-release, Top Gun was also recently made available for purchase in 4K Ultra HD for the first time, along with new special features to celebrate the movie’s legacy.

Considering that theaters are trying to bounce back to business, relaunching a fan favorite is a good decision for both studios and theaters. AMC specifically faced major setbacks during the pandemic, losing $4.6 billion in 2020 and losses worth $567 million in its current quarter.

Although an IMAX release promises 3D technology added to the film, in reality, the updated version comes with remastered crisp visuals and enhanced audio, which should please longtime fans of the movie. Furthermore, with Cruise set to reprise his role in the upcoming sequel Top Gun: Maverick, which is slated for release later this summer, now seems like the perfect time to revisit the original.

Though it initially received mixed reviews from critics, the movie gained huge popularity among audiences and became a box office hit. Deemed as one of Cruise’s best works in his early years, Top Gun grossed $356 million over its meager $15 million budget. It also won the Academy Award for Berlin’s “Take My Breath Away” in the Best Original Song category.

A landmark film of its time, the movie’s portrayal of the US Airforce led to a rise in enrollments never seen before in American history.

Following a decade of attempts to get a sequel in development, Cruise finally confirmed in 2017 that Maverick is in the works and the actor will be back to play the iconic character. Its release is currently scheduled for July 2, 2021.
