Uncharted Post-credit Scenes Keep the Film Open to Exciting Sequel

Uncharted director Ruben Fleischer discussed the limitless possibilities of post-credit scenes in an interview with Indiewire recently.

With a budget of $120 million and celebrity actors Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg, Uncharted easily topped the highest-anticipated movies list this year. While the movie received mixed reviews, the two post-credit scenes surprised many.

In one of the post-credit scenes, a haggard, grimy man is seen scribbling on a postcard addressed to Nathan Drake (Tom Holland) while he basically rots in jail with other baddies.

Fischer didn’t need to show it explicitly, but it’s certain that Nathan’s elder brother Sam was actually alive all this time, without Nathan having an ounce of knowledge about it.

Throughout the movie, Sam is presumed dead and is mostly lived through Nathan’s memories, who constantly reminisces about the time spent with his brother. It turns out that revealing Sam’s existence was a part of Fleischer’s bigger plan. According to him, it was important for them to:

…Keep the possibility of Sam being alive at the end of this film, because in the video game franchise, he comes back later and he is a character that’s part of the adventure.

Fleischer also added that he wanted to let the audience know that Sam was alive, even though Nathan didn’t. He didn’t want to play cheap tricks of suddenly bringing him alive.

I thought it was important that even though Nate doesn’t know that Sam’s alive, the audiences know that there’s a possibility of him returning in future films, if we’re lucky enough to get to make a sequel.

Fleischer’s also extremely tight-lipped about the actor who played adult Sam, so much so that the actor isn’t even credited in the movie. The secrecy behind the actor makes the movie all the more thrilling.

The second post-credit scene also makes the sequel bigger and more creative if given the chance to.

The scene sees Gage introducing Roman (just the name) to Nathan, and as soon as things turn sideways in the meeting, Mark Wahlberg appears sporting Sully’s signature mustache. Roman was the first villain of Uncharted games.

The two incredibly open-ended post-credit scenes give Fleischer ample room to play for a sequel (whose storyline might hit closer to the first game installment.)

Meanwhile, Uncharted is estimated to earn $45-50 million during the weekend. Although it currently exceeds expectations, only a good run at the box office would guarantee a sequel, which in turn, will bring Fleischer’s visions to life.
