‘WandaVision’ Episode 8: Enter the Scarlet Witch!

The eighth episode of WandaVision was the most poignant, stunning analysis of the unimaginable grief Wanda Maximoff has suffered throughout her life. Agatha (the witch disguised as Wanda’s neighbour Agnes) takes Wanda on a trip through the past using a portals sequence.

We observe as Wanda watched her parents die because of a Stark Industries missile in Sokovia while hiding under the bed with her twin brother Pietro. Agatha points out to Wanda that she apparently had been using a probability hex to ensure they remained safe when the missile went off, and her house exploded.

In a post-Age of Ultron world, Wanda is once again battling with more grief. Pietro is gunned down in Sokovia while trying to help the Avengers. In one heart-wrenching scene, where Vision is striving to help Wanda through the grieving process, we see an intimate dialogue between the two, and Vision tells Wanda, “What is grief if not love persevering?”

The last fraction of Wanda’s memory concentrates on her trying to get Vision’s body back after Endgame. Wanda walks in on Director Hayward and his S.W.O.R.D. squad disassembling Vision’s body after he’s confirmed the “most dangerous sentient weapon ever made.” Wanda’s grief ultimately reaches a breaking point. She drives to the empty lot where Vision bought a deed for their home “to grow old in.” Her magic explodes, causing her to take over the town of WestView and introducing the fictional reality she’s in.

Wanda’s powers allow her to control probability via her hexes. As long as the thing she was trying to control remains in her line of sight, Wanda can control the probability of what would happen next. In the episode, we see Wanda staring at the non-detonated Stark missile that landed in her living room. According to Agatha, the incident was simply a case of “good luck” developed by Wanda that resisted it from ever going off.

Her powers are increasingly significant for one fan theory that’s floated around for a while. According to this theory, WandaVision isn’t prepping up Mephisto to be the big bad reveal in the finale, but Dormammu (the metaphysical villain that Strange had to defeat in his film back in 2016).

Enter the Scarlet Witch!

Marvel Studios wasn’t allowed to use the word mutant for Wanda and Pietro; that’s why both were referred to as enhanced beings. Since they couldn’t exist as Magneto’s children (that’s Fox territory), they were retconned, even in the comics, paving the path to Age of Ultron‘s release. Post-Fox acquisition, everything shifted, and towards the end of this WandaVision episode, Wanda is finally introduced as the Scarlet Witch.

In this week’s WandaVision episode, the post-credits scene pitches a finale where Wanda might have to combat White Vision (a version of the character that actually was used as a sentient weapon).

However heartbreaking it might be, to protect her family, Wanda needs to admit that Vision is actually dead and win against him in the process. She might receive a little help from Monica Rambeau (who was found by Pietro after trying to help Wanda) or Spectrum, along the process.
