Werewolf by Night might be getting his own MCU project. Filmmaker Kevin Smith has revealed that Marvel Studios has plans to bring the comic character to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Smith mentioned on an episode of FatMan Beyond (via Comicbook.com) that he had considered the comic character at one point when he was working on Howard the Duck animated series for Hulu.
However, Marvel told him that they had plans of using the character for a future project.
Smith said that when he was working on Howard the Duck, he reached out to Walter Flanagan from Comic Book Men and told him that he wanted to have a go at all the 70s characters. Flanagan gave him suggestions and Werewolf By Night was on the list as well.
The series was eventually scrapped, but Smith revealed the vision he had in his mind for Werewolf by Night,
The idea of our story was that Howard was trapped here, and he was trying to get pages of the Darkhold, which would allow him to go back. There’s Howard as I’m laying it out, and then I go into Jeph and told him what I wanted to do, and that’s when they said, ‘You can’t use Werewolf by Night,’ and I asked why. They said the movie division was using him.
In the comics, Werewolf by Night is a supporting character of Moon Knight. And as it happens to be, Moon Knight is currently filming with Oscar Isaac in the lead role of Spector, and Ethan Hawke set to be the show’s villain, in an undisclosed role.
First introduced in Marvel Spotlight #2 in February 1972, Jack Russell’s bloodline carries a wolf curse, derived from a Wolf god or demon who brought his abilities onto Earth. The curse can go dormant and even skip generations or can be activated by magic.
Jack’s ancestor, Grigori, uses Darkhold to read a passage on lycanthropy: the art of changing into a werewolf that activates the curse in him.
If the word ‘Darkhold’ sounds familiar to you, that is because it’s the ancient book of spells that Wanda is reading in the end credits scene of WandaVision. The very same one that Agatha Harkness claimed has unspeakable power made of dark matter from the Hell Dimension.
Marvel also has the upcoming Blade film about Vampires (which was hinted at in Loki). It is a possibility that he might end up appearing in the Moon Knight series as the character of Moon Knight first appeared in Werewolf by Night #32 (1975).
It seems as if MCU is headed towards introducing a lot of supernatural characters from the comics. This might be a good starting point to build up a supernatural team like Legion of Monsters, Midnight Sons, or Night Shift.
But now that Wanda has the Darkhold, it would be interesting to see how Werewolf by Night gets a hold on it.
