Wesley Snipes Approves Of Mahershala Ali As MCU’s Blade

Eternals post-credit scene officially introduced the half-vampire, half-human vampire hunter, Blade, to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

If you’re familiar with the original Blade trilogy with Wesley Snipes, you know it was considered one of the early films that established a solid foundation for all future superhero movies.

So, it was only a matter of time before fans would start comparing Snipes, the O.G. Blade, to Mahershala Ali, who’ll be playing the superhero in MCU’s Phase 4. However, it looks like Ali already has Snipes’ full support.

When a Twitter user compared the two actors, saying, “Best of luck to Mahershala Ali who’s gonna smash it I’m sure as Blade, but he’s gonna have a hard time outdoing Wesley Snipes,” Snipes was quick to reply before any fandom wars broke out.

Snipes quote tweeted the original post and said, “He will do great,” giving Ali his seal of approval.

Guess that settles it then! Ali is an exceptional actor, and if Snipes himself finds him worthy, I can’t see why anyone else would disapprove.

The post-credit scene of Eternals doesn’t exactly feature Ali himself, but rather, his voice. When Dane Whitman contemplates picking up a magical sword, he hears a voice off-screen that warns him, asking if he really wants to do that.

Director Chloé Zhao later confirmed that this was indeed none other than the vampire hunter himself.

Speaking to Empire, Ali talked about this scene and the beginning of his MCU experience,

It was really cool, getting to do that. It was scary. Because, you know, you’re talking before you’re filming it. I’m pretty particular about my choices, like most actors, and so having to make some choices – even with a line, vocally – this early on, it brought up some very real anxieties. And it made the job real. It’s like, ‘Okay, this is happening now,’ you know, and that’s exciting.

Bassam Tariq is set to direct the new Blade film, with Stacy Osei-Kuffour writing the script. Not much is known about the movie besides Ali being cast in the titular role.

Last month, a leaked tweet by Marvel India suggested that Blade had a release date set for October 7, 2022. But seeing how the filming hasn’t even begun yet, it would be hard to imagine the film coming out any time before 2023.

At San Diego Comic-Con 2019, it was announced that Mahershala Ali would play the title character. Osei-Kuffour has been tapped to pen the film’s script.
