A Complete Guide to Klaus Hargreeves’ Powers in The Umbrella Academy

In season 3 or the latest season of The Umbrella Academy, Klaus Hargreeves discovers more about his unique powers. His powers evolved in the third season and here’s how.

If you’ve been following the series for a while now, you know that Klaus is the fourth member of the dysfunctional Hargreeves family, also known as Number Four. Earlier, Klaus is mostly seen in the background, while his brothers and sisters show great involvement.

But in season 3, Klaus discovers something remarkable about himself. He seems to have the power of resurrection. After all, all that communicating with the dead was not for nothing!

Klaus Hargreeves’ main superpower is the ability to communicate with the dead. He can also summon spirits at his own will to assist in battles. In season 3, it is revealed that Klaus also has the power of resurrecting himself from the dead.

Klaus Hargreeves’ Powers Explained

Klaus’ most vital power is the ability to communicate with the dead. In other words, he can talk to ghosts and summon them at will. He is also known as The Séance, due to this power of mediumship.

Klaus can communicate with spirits at both a physical and mental level. Owing to his powers, he has an ongoing relationship with his dead brother Ben, who even possesses him for a while.

Klaus detests his powers and they are even portrayed as hallucinations, owing to the show’s approach of depicting superpowers as a sign of neurodivergence. Klaus hates using his powers to communicate with anyone except Ben, and has little to no control over which spirit seeks his help.

Spirits of the dead come to him like hallucinations and it torments his peace of mind. This is also why Klaus developed a fear of the dead, along with the mistreatment meted out to him by his father. He also took the help of drugs to make the voices in his head die down.

In the final episode of season 1, Klaus is able to grant physical presence to his deceased brother Ben for the first time. This was the first sign of upgrade of his powers of mediumship. Further, in season 2, he is able to summon ghosts at his own will.

In the opening of season 2, he is able to summon a group of ghost soldiers at his own will in the material plane. In season 3, finally, he realizes that his previous experiences are not just instances of his use of superpower, but his ability to return from the dead.

How Do Klaus’ Powers Evolve in Season 3?

In season 3, Klaus realizes that along with the ability to communicate with spirits of the dead, he also has the power to resurrect himself from the dead. After a drastic mistake, he discovers that his previous trips to the other side or the side of the dead, were not just trips.

They were, in fact, his experiences with death, after which he was able to resurrect himself back to life. These trips were instances where he died previously, but was able to return to life via his resurrecting abilities.

This means that Klaus is immortal and can return to life after a brief period of time in the other side. After training extensively with Reginald, Klaus is able to master this power of immortality by decreasing his returning time to less than a minute.

In the penultimate episode of season 3, he masters immortality and is fully obliterated. So now he can easily return to his family without any hindrance. However, this power is valid only for resurrecting himself.

At least, as of now, we have not seen Klaus resurrecting anyone else from the dead, not even his deceased brother Ben. So, it is just valid for himself. Basically, Klaus can take multiple trips to the world of the dead and back, all at his own will.

How Strong is Klaus Hargreeves?

Now, this is a subjective question and can never have a definite answer. If you ask me, Klaus was not this strong to begin with. As we can see, his powers evolved over the course of 3 seasons and now he is way more powerful than he was in season 1.

In season 1, he had no idea of his own power and in fact, detested using them except to converse with Ben. He only realized the value of his abilities towards the end of season 1, and mostly in season 2.

As of now, Klaus is pretty strong considering he is immortal and can return from the dead immediately. He was able to reduce his returning time to less than a minute, which is pretty remarkable. He was not this potent in the beginning, so credits where due.

In further seasons, we might see his powers developing even more and also witness him actually using them for something more vital and significant apart from communicating with Ben.
