The Mayor of Kingstown is a super engrossing crime drama that leaves you wanting more! Here we follow Jeremy Renner’s Mike, who has as to take over as Kingstown’s “mayor” unofficially after his brother dies.
During the course of the first season, Mike has to appease both, those in power and the prisoners who do their dirty work in order to ensure everything works smoothly. But he is no stranger to the prison life himself. That’s right — Mike was in prison! But the question you may be wondering is… why?
Mike’s backstory hasn’t been explored by the Mayor of Kingstown yet. We know that Mike was briefly the shot-caller of a white supremacist gang in prison to ensure his survival. But the felony he committed that sent him to the prison is not revealed.
As of now, we are yet in the dark as to why Mike was arrested and imprisoned or what felony he committed.
Despite his best appearances, we always knew that Mike was not the “good guy.” Now that he has taken over his father and brother’s role as the “Mayor,” that is, someone who brokers peace deals and negotiations between the gangs and the law enforcements, he has to be even more cunning than before.
In such a situation, as murky as his criminal background seems, it’s actually quite a good advantage — As we see in the episodes, his time in both, a gang and prison, helps him come up with good strategies that keep both sides happy.
Besides this, Mike is familiar with the different gangs and is also very sharply aware of the key players and important bosses, being able to anticipate their move or/and understand with whom to align.
However, one season down and we still don’t have specifics about Mike’s criminal past. Either this is the show’s way of saying that it doesn’t matter, all we need to know is that he has a tough shell.
Or, they’re preparing to explore his past in more detail in season 2 and have some big reveals out soon. Keep a watch out for S2!
