Eternals Writer Reveals What Happened To Sprite’s Powers At The End

Marvel Studios’ Eternals gave us complex new superheroes who all got their fair share of screen time, but one character whose struggles were highlighted in particular was Sprite.

Sprite felt like an outcast throughout the film who couldn’t fit in anywhere because of her looks/age. However, the ending saw a dramatic turn of events for Sprite, and if anyone’s story had a somewhat happy conclusion, it was hers.

Sprite can be described as an old soul in a child’s body who never grows and can never really have relationships like grown-ups do, and no one ever takes her seriously even after her being 7,000 years old.

At the end of the film, we see Sersi use the ‘left over’ cosmic energy she got from the Uni-Mind to take away Sprite’s powers so that she can live a normal life among humans.

Now you might be wondering – How is that even possible? Is she no longer a superhero who can make marvelous illusions? Can she no longer absorb cosmic powers?

Well, Eternals screenwriters Ryan and Kaz Firpo have explained just that in a recent interview with The Direct.

As far as we’ve always considered it, what makes an Eternal an Eternal is that ability to draw on Celestial energy, and essentially what Sersi has done is remove that ability. She’s taken that generator out of her.

So now she is just, as far as we know, a mortal who will age and grow and live as one of us truly, and doesn’t have that magical ability. She doesn’t have those illusions that can make her live a different life. So as far as we’re concerned, she’s flesh and blood.

Sprite being human solves a lot of problems for Marvel. Lia McHugh, who plays Sprite, is 16 years old, and by the time a sequel is announced, the actress is sure to have a sudden growth spurt (you know, just like the Stranger Things kids did).

And it would be a headache, even with Marvel’s level of CGI, to make Sprite look 14 forever. With her aging in the MCU, McHugh could keep on playing the character for about a decade or so.

Now that Kingo, Phastos, and Sersi are held as ‘hostages’ by Arishem with Druig, Thena, and Makkari cruising the universe with Harry Styles’ Eros to find other Eternals, Sprite might need to choose another companion.

In another interview with The Direct, McHugh talked about future MCU appearances and working with Kit Harington’s Dane Whitman,

“The thing that connected her to Dane Whitman and the story is the fact that her sort of sister, Sersi, is dating him. If that were to continue in this story, I guess she would still have some type of relationship with him.”
