What happens to Haissam Haqqani in Homeland Season 4?

Haissam Haqqani is one of the longest-lasting characters in the Homeland universe. The Talibani terrorist has been part of numerous catastrophic attacks, including the 9/11 twin tower attack in the US.

When introduced in Season 4, he seemed like a formidable antagonist, unlike anything Carrie had previously encountered. He was much bigger than all those who came before, and with him came bigger threats.

He is one of the most wanted fugitives the CIA has been after since the events of 9/11, and Carrie was also part of the mission to hunt him. Over the course of the story, we see Haqqani’s motives unravel, and with each revelation, the United States loses a battle.

In the end, in one of his endeavors, he’s shot by Quinn but manages to escape from the embassy. So, does Haqqani die in Homeland Season 4?

Haqqani survives in Season 4 and escapes the CIA. Despite being shot by Quinn and almost getting killed by Carrie, Haqqani lives. He cracks a deal with Dar Adal and Saul, where his name is crossed from the kill list.

Haqqani actually manages to kidnap Saul Berenson and even prevents him from escaping. His simple motive is to protect himself from the CIA while also freeing his people from the captivity of America.

He goes to different lengths to ensure Saul remains with him until the exchange takes place in Islamabad. He even has backup leverage in the form of a boy with a bomb vest. Carrie, who knows what Haqqani is capable of, ensures that the exchange of Saul and the Talibani terrorists happens smoothly without any casualties.

This was the first battle the CIA lost. On their return, the embassy is ambushed by Haqqani’s men, who were quick to use this opportunity to their advantage. Here’s where his biggest game plan comes into light.

Haqqani didn’t just want to free his people but to get a highly confidential document with the names of all the spies present in the Middle East. With the CIA having no other option, they end up giving him this document. Although Peter Quinn does manage to get a bullet into Haqqani, he escapes.

Later on, the US forces retreat and denounce all relations with Pakistan. Peter Quinn and Carrie stay as Quinn goes rogue to find Haqqani, and Carrie gets permission to find Quinn. In the end, none of it comes to fruition since Haqqani is still alive.

A major reason for this is Dar Adal and Saul Berenson. The two had cut a deal with Haqqani, who wanted his name off the US’ kill list. In exchange, he declared he wouldn’t give refuge to terrorists in Pakistan. With this, Haqqani’s time in Season 4 comes to an end and he later appears only in Season 8.
