Early Critics’ Reviews Say What If…? Is A Must-Watch

Marvel’s What If…? will debut on Disney+ on August 11. Lucky TV critics who had early access to the first three episodes have returned with high praise for Marvel’s first animated series.

What If…? is about to reimagine many MCU canons in a way that’s never been seen before. Narrated by Jeffrey’s Wright’s the Watcher, the anthological series will prod at the possibilities of having Agent Carter taking the super-soldier serum instead of Steve Rogers, T’Challa flying off as a Star-Lord, Dr Strange caught up in a tragic love story and more.

Critics have praised the animation and the dive into a twilight zone tone. Exploration of these narratives brings twists we couldn’t even expect. In particular, Hayley Atwell and late Chadwick Boseman’s voicing for Peggy Carter and T’Challa has been commended. Have a look at a few critics’ tweets.

There are, of course, a few reviews that border on being mixed or even disappointed. As we are in the multiverse, not all stories can be cohesive or smooth-sailing and perhaps What If…? may have a confusing aftertaste.

As Marvel and Disney have enjoyed a string of success with all their TV show releases this year, the early positive review will get fans riled up to watch What If…? as soon as it airs. It’s not every day that you see your favorite MCU characters in a new light and that in itself can pay off as a treat.

It is also interesting to note that executive producer Brad Winderbaum has stated that What If…? is not an isolated feature but “as a story that exists in the MCU, is as important as any other and is woven into that tapestry.”

Will that also mean that certain elements of What If…? will play out in the bigger MCU properties? August 11 will tell.

About What If…?

What If…? is an upcoming American animated anthology series created by A.C. Bradley for the streaming service Disney+, based on the Marvel Comics series of the same name.

It explores what would happen if major moments from the films of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) occurred differently.

The series is produced by Marvel Studios, their first animated series since becoming their own production company. Bradley serves as head writer of the series, with Bryan Andrews directing.

Jeffrey Wright stars as the Watcher, who narrates the series. By September 2018, Marvel Studios was developing a number of series for Disney+, and one based on the What If…? comic was first reported in March 2019.

What If…?s first season is scheduled to premiere in August 2021, and will consist of 10 episodes.
