Amazon’s LOTR Title Reveal Is Proof of Why the Series Is So Expensive

Prime Video’s The Lord of the Rings series has received a title treatment, and it’s a reminder of exactly why Amazon shelled out an estimated $465 million on the J.R.R. Tolkien lore.

With its premiere date set for September 2022, the promotion for the series officially begins. Amazon’s title announcement teaser revealed the series’ title—THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RINGS OF POWER.

The one-minute clip shows molten silver metal forging the title as it runs through the mold carved into a redwood. Stitched within the clip is a CGI scenic reimagining of Middle-earth’s geography, as we see the fog-covered Misty Mountains and the red-hot lava of Mount Doom.

The teaser has a chilling, desolate female voice narrating Tolkien’s classic Three Rings For The Elven Kings poem,

Three Rings for the Elven-kings under the sky,

Seven for the Dwarf-lords in their halls of stone,

Nine for Mortal Men doomed to die,

One for the Dark Lord on his dark throne

In the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie.

The grand reveal clip is a product of true craftsmanship as a behind-the-scenes video posted by IGN revealed that real blacksmiths worked on the title and it wasn’t all CGI.

Set thousands of years before the events of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, the series will focus on the Second Age of Middle-earth history in a time of peace, with promises to birth “the greatest villain that ever flowed from Tolkien’s pen (that) threatened to cover all the world in darkness.”

Series showrunners J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay explained in a press release,

This is a title that we imagine could live on the spine of a book next to J.R.R. Tolkien’s other classics. The Rings of Power unites all the major stories of Middle-earth’s Second Age: The forging of the rings, the rise of the Dark Lord Sauron, the epic tale of Númenor, and the Last Alliance of Elves and Men.
