Thor: Love and Thunder introduced us to one of MCU’s most infamous weapons, the All-Black Necrosword. In the MCU and Marvel comics, the sword is used by Gorr to slaughter gods mercilessly, thus giving him the title of The God Butcher.
But what exactly is the Necrosword? Did Thor permanently destroy it? Will the weapon return in future MCU projects? Here’s everything you need to know about the All-Back Necrosword.
The All-Black Necrosword, or simply the All-Black, is a malicious dark deity and the first symbiote to have existed in the universe. The symbiote bonded with Gorr, who was its second host after Knull.
All-Black Necrosword in Thor: Love and Thunder
Gorr got hold of the Necrosword when he saw two Gods fighting each other. He despised them for not answering his prayers and killed them with the Necrosword.
In the film, Gorr can use the Necrosword to summon creatures from the shadows known as the Berserkers. However, besides being surrounded by shadows and bringing it alive in some form, the All-Black Necrosword also kills its host.
The All-Black possesses Gorr as it is a living creature and a sentient being. Its malevolence curses anyone wielding it. We see Gorr slowly die as he slaughters one god after another.
In the end, the Mighty Thor (Jane Foster) uses the Mjolnir to break the Necrosword. However, considering that the All-Black is a dark creature that functions similar to the Aether, it is still alive.
While we may or may not see the Necrosword in future MCU projects, we might see the All-Black return in some other form. To understand how this can be possible, you’ll need to understand the All-Black from the comics.
All-Black Necrosword in Marvel Comics
The All-Black Necrosword in Marvel Comics is far stronger than the one depicted in Thor: Love and Thunder. As mentioned earlier, it is the first-ever symbiote created and wielded by Knull. Over time and space, the All-Black has bonded with the likes of Gorr, Galactus, Ego, Loki, and Thor.
The All-Black has a rich comic history as its impact on different characters has been significant. Anyone who is a host to the All-Black possesses superhuman strength, durability, and speed. Besides this, they can also manipulate dark energy and matter, nullify opponents’ powers, and regenerate rapidly. The dark entity has also had connections with Eddie Brock, aka Venom.
All this comic-book history gives the MCU creators numerous potential ways to build stories for different characters. This is why the All-Black might return to the MCU, although nothing is confirmed yet.
About Thor: Love and Thunder
Thor: Love and Thunder is a MCU movie and the fourth installation in the Thor series. It is directed by Ragnarok’s director, Taika Waititi, and will show Chris Hemsworth and Natalie Portman reprising their roles as Thor Odinson and Dr. Jane Foster.
The movie will be based on The Mighty Thor comics in which Thor Odinson loses the ability to lift Mjolnir, and Jane Foster takes on the role of Mighty Thor. After the events of Avengers: Endgame, Thor teams up with The Guardians of the Galaxy for a short time, leaving Valkyrie as the ruler of New Asgard. But Thor returns to team up with Korg, Valkyrie and Jane’s Mighty Thor to take down Gorr the God Butcher (Christian Bale) – before he takes out all the gods in existence.
Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson return for Watiti’s second go, while Russell Crowe and Natalie Portaman join Taika’s project for the first time. The movie is out on July 8, 2022.
