When is Dune 2 Coming Out?

It has just been days since Dune: Part One has released and we’re all looking forward to part two! Considering the hype that part one created, I am not surprised to see Dune 2 get a release date with days of the release of part one.

Yes, Dune 2 has now been officially been given a greenlight. Legendary Pictures announced on Tuesday, 26th October 2021 that Dune 2 will release exclusively in theatres in 20th October 2023.

Dune 2 was always a part of director Denis Villeneuve’s plans, but it had not received the green signal from the studio until now. Since it has officially been approved by the studios now, this means that production and filming should begin soon.

Here’s everything we know about Dune 2 as of now and what to expect from the sequel.

Dune 2 is expected to release exclusively in theatres in 20th October 2023 as per the official announcement.

The filming and pre-production should begin in 2022. The sequel will be directed by Denis Villeneuve, who is also the director of Part One. Since the sequel is supposed to be based on the next half of the first book of the Dune series, much of the cast of Part One will also return.

Timothée Chalamet as Paul Atreides, Rebecca Ferguson as Lady Jessica Atreides, Zendaya as Chani and Stellan Skarsgård as baron Vladimir Harkonnen are all expected to return for the sequel.

Even before the project was officially greenlit, Villeneuve had assured us that he has already begun working on the Dune sequel. He said,

I’m writing part two now, and I feel like I’m eight years old again. That’s very uncommon for me. It’s the first time I’ve experienced it where I’m watching one of my movies, and I have a moment of deep gratitude, of deep joy, and I say, ‘Thank you, life, for having allowed me to bring that to the screen.’ I don’t know how other people will feel about it. But me? Denis Villeneuve when he was 14 years old? Thank you.

Bottom line: everyone is already at work and if the pandemic does not come back to ruin plans, we should get Dune 2 right on time.

What to Expect from Dune 2?

Dune 2 will be based on the second half of Book 1 of the Dune series by Frank Herbert. Dune: Part One was based on the first half of the same book.

As per the books, part 2 should give us more of the emperor, Chani and Stilgar. As per Paul’s visions in Part One, he will become one of the Fremen.

Paul Atreides

We will most likely see Paul avenging his father’s death as the new head of his house Atreides.

If Villeneuve follows the book closely like he did for Part One, Paul and Chani’s relationship should be central to the plot. Besides, since House Atreides is pretty much in ruins as of now, it will be interesting to see how Paul revives his house and takes his revenge.

Part two should also introduce some new characters going by the next half of the book. All in all, be ready to go back to Arrakis for some major twists and reveals.
