Is Episode IX the last Star Wars movie? Will there be an Episode X?

Lately, you might find that Star Wars has been taking up more of your TV time, rather than releasing titles for the silver screen. Indeed, the last Star War movie, Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker, was released in 2019 and there hasn’t been a Star Wars theatrical release even since then.

So now, many fans are wondering: Will there be any more movies, or is Episode IX the last Star Wars film?

Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker is the last film in the Skywalker Saga, which consists of nine films in total. However, it will not be the last Star Wars film, as there are a few films planned for future release.

Before we jump into future movies, let’s look at the current situation. The last two Skywalker episodes were not that well-received, with complaints that they unnecessarily stretched out the source material.

On the other hand, the Disney+ shows have been doing tremendously well, with the latest hit being Andor. It’s possible that this may encourage the franchise to create more TV-focused stories and put films on the back burner for now.

Future Star Wars Film

There have been plenty of talks about more Star Wars films that are outside the realm of the Skywalker saga. Sadly, for various reasons, many of them have been paused or not been greenlit. Here are the two which remain confirmed as of November 2022:

I. Rogue Squadron

The film was first announced at Disney Investor Day 2020, with director Patty Jenkins attached to the film.

As per reports, it would be about a new generation of starfighter pilots, all of whom will be new characters. Following their thrilling space adventures, we’d enter a new era of the Star Wars franchise.

If the name, Rogue Squadron, sounds familiar to you, that may be because it’s named after the popular 1998 Star Wars video game that was about Rebel pilots fighting against the Empire. While the film is supposed to be set after the events of Episode IX, it will use the video game as inspiration.

It was originally scheduled for December 2023. However, the film has now been delayed due to rewrites. No future date has been announced.

II. Taika Waititi Film

Another project that was confirmed to be in the pipeline is an untitled film to be directed by Taika Waititi. Initially, this film was supposed to release after Rogue Squadron. But now, it may be released before—possibly, in late 2023.

No details about the film, including the plot, have been released. Like Jenkins, Waititi also wants to write a completely new piece that has little-to-no ties to the original Star Wars stories.

Filming is supposed to begin in early 2023, but we are still awaiting any updates.

Will there be more movies about Rey?

Although we do have three films surrounding Rey, as a relatively new character who’s also young in age, there’s potential for her to be in more films. As for the criticism that her movies faced, it was more to do with stretching the legacy story rather than the character itself.

So it is possible that Rey may have a movie of her own in the future, where both the story and threats are completely new. She is, after all, the last Jedi and that makes for an interesting premise to take the Jedi story forward.

However, there have been no reports about developing a Rey-centric movie anytime soon, along with the fact that Daisy Ridley has not yet been approached for any future projects.

Still, if Hayden Christensen and Ewan McGregor are examples to go by, I wouldn’t put it past Ridley returning in the years to come.
