The much-awaited threequel to the MCU’s Guardians of the Galaxy series is set to hit theatres this week. The movie will conclude the trilogy that started almost 9 years ago, in 2014.
Over the last decade, Guardians of the Galaxy has acquired one of the largest fanbases in the MCU, thus making this final film all the more special. As James Gunn, the director, has already said before, it’s going to be an emotional ride.
GOTG 3 will focus mainly on Rocket’s origin story, something fans have been wanting for quite a long time. The film will also feature appearances from famous Marvel Comics characters like the High Evolutionary, Adam Warlock, and Lylla the Otter.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3 is releasing exclusively in cinemas on May 5, 2023. Following the theatrical release, it will be made available on Disney+ and digital formats; however, no date for the same has been confirmed yet.
The movie will also release on physical home video formats like DVD, Blu-Ray and 4K at an undetermined time.
1. When will GOTG Vol.3 come to Disney+?
It is still too early for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3 to receive a Disney+ release date; hence the announcement has not yet been made. However, based on recent trends, we can predict when the movie is most probably going to be made available for streaming.
The time gap between the MCU films’ cinematic release and arrival on Disney+ began speeding up after Black Widow. But Disney has recently gone back to taking longer intervals to allow their movies to perform better at the box office.
When we look at Thor: Love & Thunder, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, they each took 64 days, 82 days and 90 days respectively to come to Disney+.
Judging by the pattern of the recent MCU movies, it could easily take Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3 around 90 days to arrive on Disney+, meaning it will be available only around August 2023.
But it won’t be a surprise if they decide to delay the Disney+ release all the way to September 2023 because it looks like the movie will do much better in the box office than Quantumania, which despite its performance still got a later date.
2. At what time will GOTG Vol.3 release on Disney+?
Disney+ usually has a fixed time for when new arrivals become available on the platform. Here are the times for some major time zones:
- Pacific Time: 12:00 AM / Midnight
- Eastern Time: 03:00 AM
- British Summer Time: 08:00 AM
- Australian Eastern Standard Time: 07:00 PM
Sometimes, releases can be delayed by a few minutes to an hour if the servers are being updated.
3. Will GOTG Vol.3 come to Disney+ Premier Access?
Following the disastrous effect that Black Widow’s Premier Access release had on its revenues, it doesn’t look like Disney will be trying this tactic again for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3.
The initiative proved to be a massive failure so I’m sure this will be the last thing Disney or Marvel will want for their upcoming film.
Premier Access allowed users to pay extra to watch movies that were still in theatres but not yet available for free on streaming platforms. But films like Cruella, Black Widow and Jungle Cruise eventually led to its demise because of how poorly the movies performed.
Disney hasn’t made use of the feature in about a year now. And although they haven’t completely gotten rid of it, there’s a very low chance they’re looking to bring it back.
4. Will GOTG Vol.3 be on other streaming services?
Since almost all recent MCU films are available on other streaming services like Amazon Prime, Apple TV, Google Play and YouTube, the same could happen for Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3.
The only catch is that you’ll have to pay extra to watch the movie, as opposed to Disney+, which allows you to watch for free once you buy a subscription. But again, an announcement for the same is yet to be made.
It may be a long time before you’re able to watch GOTG 3 from the comfort of your home, so I’d highly recommend that you catch the movie in a theatre while it’s still running.
