Netflix’s Avatar: The Last Airbender Series Will Begin Filming Soon

Netflix’s live-action take on Avatar: The Last Airbender is still in preproduction, and yet it has already pleased fans of the animated series with the perfect casting.

As the anticipation and hype around it builds even further, actor Daniel Dae Kim has revealed that the series will begin filming soon.

In an interview with Collider , Kim, who was recently cast as Fire Lord Ozai in the series, was asked about when filming/production would begin. The actor answered, “I think production starts in a couple of weeks.”

However, Kim’s answer was quite short and vague. Given that Netflix hasn’t even announced an official release date for the series yet, it’s understandable that whatever details the cast and crew members know about would be kept on the down-low.

Last week, the working title for Avatar: The Last Airbender was changed from “Trade Winds” to  “Trade Winds & Blue Dawn,” as listed on Production Weekly.

The animated series, created by Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, ran for three seasons, airing from 2005 to 2008. It was then followed by a sequel series in 2012, the Legend of Korra, set 70 years after the events of The Last Airbender.

Initially, DiMartino and Konietzko were both announced to lead the live-action series when it was first announced in 2018.

However, the duo left in 2020 due to creative differences before striking a deal with Nickelodeon’s Avatar Studios that’ll focus on numerous animated/CGI films and series expanding the franchise.

Netflix later announced Albert Kim would be taking over as the new showrunner leading the live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender.

The actors cast for the live-action look a lot like their respective animated characters. Hopefully, once the actors are in full costume, Netflix will manage to make them look like they’ve been pulled straight out of the animation panels.

Gordon Cormier will lead the series as Avatar Aang, Kiawentiio is Katara, Ian Ousley is Sokka, with Dallas Liu is Prince Zuko of the Fire Nation. Recently, three new additions announced were Paul Sun-Hyung as Uncle Iroh, Lim Kay Siu as Monk Gyatso, and Ken Leung as Commander Zhao.
