Dune 2 Will Be ‘Ready To Shoot In 2022’ If Greenlit, Reveals Director

Denis Villeneuve revealed exciting news at a Q&A roundtable with Screenrant, sharing that the sequel of the upcoming movie Dune can be filmed as early as 2022.

Dune, starring Timothy Chalamet and Zendaya, is based on Frank Herbert’s revered 1965 sci-fi novel of the same name. Villeneuve has taken it upon himself to bring the book to life. With the hype the movie has already garnered, it certainly looks like it will be up to the fans’ expectations.

Also titled Dune: Part One, it premiered at the 78th Venice International Film Festival and still has a month and a half before it is opened to the public in theaters.

According to Screenrant’s Q&A roundtable discussions, the director revealed that he is all ready to make Dune 2 come as soon as possible. He also added that his priority for the movie would be its high quality, just like the first time, and there’ll be no compromises there.

Villeneuve mentioned that the costumes and sets would take months, but he is ready to film the sequel as early as 2022.

Read the director’s complete statement on Dune 2’s production below:

If there’s enthusiasm and the movie is greenlit sooner than later, I would say that I will be ready to shoot in 2022 for sure…I am ready to go, and I will say that I am ready to bring it to screen as soon as possible, but with the first film, I really had time to make sure that it was exactly the way I wanted it to be and I would love to have the same feeling when I make the second part, so that will be the priority. The quality will be the priority.

Villeneuve had previously announced that he’d like to make the adaptation with two movies, to do justice to the complex world Frank Herbert masterfully created. Considering the first movie adaptation of Dune, David Lynch’s 1984 film failed, this seems to be a better move.

In a previous interview, Villeneuve had stated that Dune is made “as a tribute to the big-screen experience.” This comment arose after the decision to give the movie a day-and-date release.

However, there are also concerns about Dune not obtaining sequel permission if it tanks at the box office, which there are high chances of. Even the famous known movie, The Suicide Squad, ended up performing average at the box office.

Industry experts believe Dune’s chances of getting a sequel will majority arise because of its streaming potential and not a theatrical release. Mainly due to the pandemic.

Dune will be released in theaters and on HBO Max on October 22, 2021.
