HBO’s Emmy-winning anthology series, The White Lotus, captured the fans’ attention with its witty storyline and dark humor. The series follows the affluent guests and employees of the titular hotel chain, with season 1 set in Hawaii and season 2 in Sicily.
Though season 1 and season 2 follow a completely different set of characters and plot, this hasn’t stopped fans from stitching up theories about possible connections between the two.
Jennifer Coolidge’s Tanya and her husband Greg (John Gries) are the only two guests that return for season 2. One popular theory among the fans is that season 1’s Nicole Mossbacher is the sister of season 2’s Abby, the wife of Dominic.
Abby is not seen in season 2, but we hear her fighting with Dominic over the phone quite a few times.
In a recent interview with Variety, season 1’s star, Connie Britton, addresses this wild theory. When asked about the possible connection, she says she hasn’t heard the idea before.
Despite that, she cheekily adds that if the theory is true, she would love to return as Nicole in season 3 due to her admiration for show maker Mike White.
Read her full comments below:
Oooh, I’ve never heard that before. Of course I would [return]. Mike is someone I’d admired for a long time in my career, and I was fortunate enough to work with him on Beatrice at Dinner, which he wrote. I think he’s a genius, but also a kind genius. I have loved collaborating with him and I’ll say yes to him ’til the end of time.
Will Nicole return for season 3?
The White Lotus season 3 is currently in the works, and virtually nothing is known about the cast, plot, or location. During the season 2 finale, Meghan Fahy’s Daphne makes a toast and remarks, “Next year, Maldives!”
Also, Mike White revealed that season 3 will take place in Asia and focus on “death and Eastern religion and spirituality.” So, we can safely assume that season 3 will occur in the Maldives.
Regardless of the location, the next season will have some returning characters to maintain continuity and give a sense of nostalgia to the fans.
If the sibling theory is true, Laura Dern’s Abby and Connie Britton’s Nicole become favorite candidates to make a comeback.
There isn’t much evidence in the show that supports this theory besides the two belonging to affluent families (which is valid for almost all the guests), and maybe vaguely resembling each other.
Connie Britton has previously revealed that Mike wanted her to return in season 2, but the casting didn’t work. So, they might want to make it work in season 3. This drastically increases the chances of Nicole returning in the next season.
We will know more as The White Lotus season 3 ends its production. Stay tuned till then!
