Who are the JSA? Their Future in the DCEU After Black Adam

The latest DCEU film, Black Adam, hits theaters today, and DC fans can’t get enough of the latest Anti-Hero. Apart from Black Adam’s introduction in the DCEU, the 2022 film also marked the debut of the Justice Society of America in the DC Extended Universe.

But who are the JSA? Let us briefly introduce the superhero team that takes on Black Adam and we’ll also highlight the JSA’s future in the DCEU following Black Adam’s release.

Hawkman

Aldis Hodge plays Carter Hall/Hawkman, the leader of the JSA. Amanda Waller directly contacts Carter to gather a team to subdue the anti-hero on the loose, Carter has to pick the strongest superheroes the JSA has to offer for the task.

A long-time DC favorite, Hawkman’s debut in the DCEU as the JSA’s leader, sparked curiosity and hope in fans, who are wanting Hawkman’s standalone movie.

Carter Hall’s Hawkman promises to stop Black Adam not only on the orders of Amanda Waller but because the superhero believes in maintaining peace, and no one can mess that as long as he’s there.

Dr. Fate

Carter first calls up his friend Kent Nelson/Doctor Fate to join the newly formed Justice Society of America. Pierce Brosnan’s Kent is Hawkman’s right-hand man, the moral anchor of the team, and the glue that holds the JSA together.

Kent Nelson, a kind-hearted archaeologist, turns into a formidable sorcerer once he puts on the ancient golden Helmet of Fate, origins unknown. The Helmet of Fate enables Doctor Fate to use magic to create illusions, multiply, teleport, see into the future, and age slower than ordinary humans.

The two friends then call two more heroes, to complete their team.

Atom Smasher

Noah Centineo plays the role of 20-year-old Al Rothstein, a.k.a Atom Smasher. Though powerful, the young superhero has no prior experience fighting world-ending supervillains. Still, fans are excited to see Centineo bringing the DC Comics character to life.

Atom Smasher can transform the very structures of his molecules (obvious much?) to grow in size and make up for his lack of experience with enemy smashing takedowns. But Al is glad that he is not the only young rookie on the team. In fact, he’s excited to meet the last and the youngest member of the JSA.

Cyclone

Quintessa Swindell plays Maxine Funkel/Cyclone, a 19-year-old youngster kidnapped by an evil scientist in her childhood, who got her powers in a nanotechnology experiment gone wrong.

The youngest of them all, Cyclone sure has a great list of superpowers but essentially, we can say she possesses the ability to manipulate wind. Wind Manipulation helps her create something as timid as a gust of wind to full-blown hurricanes and tornadoes. She also possesses a high IQ and extreme intelligence, an added benefit against the anti-hero who has been around for fifty centuries.

Black Adam is projected to have a tremendous run at the box office, and early reactions have commended not only the anti-hero but also the Justice Society of America for putting on a stunning show filled with intense action.

The success of the 2022 film could pave the way for the DCEU to keep working with the JSA and making more movies in the future. WB can even make spinoffs to shine a light on the backstory of the new superheroes on the block.

About Black Adam

Black Adam is an upcoming American superhero film based on the DC Comics fictional supervillain, directed by Jaume Collett-Serra. It is a spinoff of the 2019 movie Shazam!, and the 11th film in the DCEU franchise.

Black Adam is the antihero to Shazam and possesses the same powers as the white-caped superhero. But after being imprisoned for 5000 years, he is finally free, and now, the Justice Society of America, a team of superheroes, must stop him before he fulfills his mission to wreak havoc on the world that rejected him.

The film stars Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson as Black Adam, and joining him are cast members Noah Centineo, Aldis Hodge, Sarah Shahi, Marwan Kenzari, Quintessa Swindell, Pierce Brosnan, and Viola Davis.
