Heels Season Finale: A Predictable Yet Satisfying Ending

Heels entered the scene as a pro wrestling drama series that one gets hooked on just for the sake of watching the story unfold as the characters struggle to resolve conflict.

Right off the bat, the series had established the tension between two brothers, Jack and Ace. The story begins when conflict arises between Jack Spade, the owner of Duffy Wrestling League (DWL), and his brother Ace when a major wrestling company takes an interest in the latter, DWL’s top babyface.

The Starz series gives viewers an insight into the wrestling business, with its core theme being unresolved family issues. Now that season 1 has concluded, one can say it’s a pretty satisfying ending, albeit a predictable one.

Just as some viewers had already predicted right in the beginning, both Jack and Ace became Heels. One could say the writers always intended to set it up that way.

This event also made Crystal the Face, at last after Jack continuously refusing to see that she’s got the skills to be in the ring.

Crystal

The finale unfolded when the Jack-Ace-Wild Bill ladder match (the main event at the South Georgia State Fair) that was supposed to redeem Ace as a Face went south. After an unfortunate mishap with Bill, Jack and Ace are left on their own to play out the match.

Jack ends up confessing that he and Willie set Ace up to be DWL’s heel. Ace loses his calm and goes off script, turning this kayfabe into a real fight.

Crystal, who is now Bill’s valet, sees this and hops into the ring to fight off Ace. He goes along with her act and allows her, the surprising new champion, to climb to the top of the ladder and grab the DWL belt for herself, making her the new Face.

However, it was still a surprising turn of events when Jack did not become the Face, despite his conversation with Staci that hinted otherwise. It looked like he was still in denial over the Kleenex incident and blamed it on Ace being the evil one.

Showrunner and star Mike O’Malley, who plays Charlie Gully, talked to Variety about Jack and Staci’s conversation,

To me, if you don’t have a clean conscience, you’re living a corrosive existence that’s eventually going to get you. Jack has to own how he treated Ace and how it’s affected his marriage and affected his relationship with his son. So here’s Jack, he’s gained everything he wanted, but his brother’s walking out on him and his wife his son aren’t there.

Overall, one could say it was a satisfying ending, seeing how we as viewers often split between rooting for either Jack or Ace.

Now that Crystal has become the surprising new Face, it would only make sense for Jack to promote her like one and possibly install a female team for fights if he wants to keep DWL afloat in the next season.
