Who is Alec in The Last Of Us, and what happened to him?

The Last of Us introduced us to many villains who are out to get Joel and Ellie. The show’s 8th Episode shows us their biggest fight for survival as they face David and his followers.

The first scene introducing David in The Last of Us Episode 8 also introduces a grieving family that is part of David’s flock. The family is shown to be mourning the loss of a man named Alec.

He might have seemed inconsequential before this point, but he is essential to the overall state of HBO’s Last of Us.

Alec was a member of David’s community of survivors. He was part of a four-person group sent to the nearby college campus to scavenge for supplies but never made it home.

Alec was the man who attacked Joel and Ellie before being killed by the former at the end of The Last Of Us Episode 6.

At the end of episode 6, a group of men scours the University of Eastern Colorado, assumedly for supplies or food, given the dire state of David’s community, as shown in Episode 8. Then they attack Joel and Ellie as the duo tries to flee on their horse to get Ellie to the Fireflies.

After a brief scuffle between Alec and Joel, Joel subdues the man and snaps his neck. Three men made it back alive, with Alec’s body in tow after Joel murdered him.

1. What Happened to Alec?

Ellie and the survivors’ leader, David, come face-to-face in the Episode as she attempts to hunt for food. We learn that Alec was killed by a “crazy man” during the raid on the campus. The crazy man is later revealed to be Joel.

During his funeral, Alec’s daughter Hannah asks David when they can bury her father. The preacher responds by claiming that the ground is hard due to the cold winter weather and they will have to wait until the spring to lay him to rest.

However, what David doesn’t want to mention Hannah is that she and the starving members of the community have either unknowingly eaten Alec’s body or will be eating him soon.

This is because the community has turned to cannibalism, and they have been eating their own dead to stave off starvation.

The reason that the survivors haven’t turned on David is that the fact they’ve been eating human flesh is being kept away from them. David’s men have passed the meat off as animals such as elk, rabbit, or venison.

2. Alec’s Importance in The Last Of Us

Alec is crucial to The Last Of Us despite only appearing once physically in the show.

Firstly, Alec and the other men were utilized as a pseudo-introduction to David’s group in The Last of Us Episode 6. Alec was also responsible for Joel’s injury, which catalyzed The Last of Us episodes 7 and 9, explaining why Ellie was alone.

Secondly, Alec- or, more appropriately, his death is used to hint at David’s true nature as a cannibal in The Last of Us episode 8. Finally, Alec attacking Joel and subsequently being killed exemplifies the kill-or-be-killed spirit of HBO’S The Last Of Us.

3. Why did David’s group try to get revenge?

The primary first is just getting back at him for killing Alec, who seemed to be a beloved group member. David likely approved the search to regain control and trust of the group again, especially as they tried to survive the harsh winter.

Alternatively, it could have been for food as David and his group were about to run out and figuring out how they would survive.

As David later pointed out to Ellie, some people in his group already knew that they were cannibals, so it’s possible that they were also hunting them down for food.
