Explained: The Existence of Makee, the Blessed One, in the Covenant

The Halo TV series premiered last week, and the show does have some new characters and designs which weren’t previously present in the games. One such character is the Blessed One called Makee.

Makee is a human who lives amongst the Covenant army and is depicted as a person trying to understand humanity so that the aliens, aka the Covenant army, can destroy them. So, who is the Blessed One? Is there more than one? If so, what is their purpose?

The Blessed One is the person who can activate the keystone, which will lead the person to the sacred ring called Halo.

Makee is helping the Covenant army get the keystone and giving them access to the sacred ring, which would be the end of life as we know it.

While Makee is established as the Blessed One, it turns out that she’s not the only one who can activate the keystone. In Episode 1, Master Chief aka John finds the artifact in Madrigal and accidentally activates it by merely touching it.

Every time he’s come in contact with this artifact, it has released a surge of energy. It has also made him remember some of his past, although he still doesn’t realize it.

He saw a dog, his parents, and himself in these visions. The visions also showed some obscure events, but we still don’t know what exactly happened.

John goes to the Rubble to seek help from his old friend Soren, who takes him to a man called Reth. Reth explains how a Blessed One is the person who can activate the keystone.

He starts talking about different things that seem like a ramble but provide more insight into this mysterious object. When Reth tries to attack John with the artifact, John comes in contact with it, and once again, the energy fields and his visions emerge.

Reth then says that the Covenant can use this artifact to destroy humans, and John is the one who can activate it. So, he should destroy the artifact and then destroy himself so that the Covenant army never succeeds in their endeavors to wipe out humanity.

This means that there are more than one Blessed Ones, and at this point, it is Makee and Master Chief.

The creators, in an interview, teased how Makee and John share a deep connection in the show. One such hint we’ve gotten until now is the scar/mark on Makee’s back.

Makee is seen undressing at the end of the episode, and we see this ominous mark on her upper back. We still don’t know what that means and what role it would play in her arc.

However, I believe it is a symbol of her ancestry or her gene that makes her a Blessed One. It also means that Master Chief might somehow be connected to this mark.

In the game franchise, any human could activate the keystone and the sacred ring called Halo. It was technology made by the Forerunners to sterilize the entire universe because it was infected with a parasite called the Flood.

The Covenant associates these rings with their religious sentiments and sees the Forerunners as gods. So, they seek these rings and want to establish alien domination. This starts a fight between humanity and the aliens.

However, in the show, the humans don’t seem to know about Halo and treat the keystone as a foreign object that would provide the answers. They merely know that the Covenant was trying to get their hands on them, so they want to secure it first.

In the upcoming episodes, we will get more answers about the rings and the Blessed Ones. We will also come to know more about the mark on Makee’s back, which might give us more clarity on her connection with Master Chief.
