What Is The Significance Of The Old Lady and Her Necklace In Ragnarok?

In Netflix’s Ragnarok, Wenche is the old lady who works at the local store in Edda and is known for being the crazy old lady who talks in an incoherent or nonsensical manner.

The series premiere begins with the protagonist Magne Seier moving to the town of Edda with his family. When Wenche witnesses him helping an old man in a wheelchair on their way in town, she says that he is a ‘good kid.’ She then touches Magne’s forehead, awakening the power of Thor within him.

Wenche has a unique necklace and is never seen without it. The necklace looks like a tiny orb clutched by a Raven paw. At the end of the Season 1 finale, Wenche uses the powers in the necklace to transform herself into a raven.

The intro for Ragnarok season 1 finale reads,

The Seeress’ prophecy: Ancient mythological tale about the creation of the world, its demise, and rebirth. The Seeress Volven (Old Norse: vǫlva) speaks to both gods and men to tell them how the world will end if they continue their evil, immoral deeds.

This seems to fit Wenche’s role in the series.

At the beginning of the season 2 premiere, Wenche takes Magne/Thor to Valhalla and tells him that he is the chosen one. This confirms that she is, in fact, not a human and, therefore, from the old world. Valhalla (the hall of the fallen) is where the god Odin houses the dead he deems worthy of dwelling with him.

Wenche (Old Lady in Ragnarok)

Throughout Season 2, it is made abundantly clear that Wenche is the Seeress. Wenche delivers a message to Magne to find one of the other gods and narrate the first words from the Völuspá prophecy, a.k.a., The Seeress’ prophecy.

Hearing I ask | from the holy races,

From Heimdall’s sons, | both high and low;

Thou wilt, Valfather, | that well I relate

Old tales I remember | of men long ago.

The Völuspá prophecy, a.k.a., The Seeress’ prophecy

Magne and Iman find each other and narrate the first stanza of the prophecy, revealing that Iman is the Goddess Freya.

Ran kills Wenche after Ran finds out that she has been helping Magne all along. When Magne kills Vidar Jutul, Odin tells him that he has avenged the death of the Volva, aka the Seeress/Wenche.

However, Odin isn’t awoken in Wotan’s body until he puts on the necklace Wenche gives him right before she dies and turns to dust. When he awakens, Odin says that normal human beings aren’t capable of handling the necklace’s powers. The necklace’s orb shines when its powers are being used.

Wotan aka Odin

It can be assumed that the necklace is the source of Odin’s powers. This is how he sees into the past, present, and future and channels his abilities. The necklace is also the tool used to awaken all the Gods. Wenche uses it to awaken Thor and Freya, whereas Odin wears it himself and uses it to awaken Týr.

Perhaps the necklace acts as a bridge between the old world and the new world and safe keeps all the Gods’ powers until they’re ready to bear them. Season 3 might reveal more about its significance when/if more Old World elements come into play.
