Which Staff Fellow Does House Decide to Fire in Season 1?

The antagonist of the first season of House is billionaire businessman Edward Vogler, who at the time becomes the new Chairman of the Board at Princeton-Plainsboro hospital.

From the minute Vogler meets Dr. Gregory House, he takes a disliking to him. He decides that he’s going to make House’s time at the hospital miserable in order to show off his position of power.

One of the first things Vogler makes House do is fire one of his fellows on staff, with the excuse of needing to make budget cuts.

The three doctors doing their fellowship under House are Dr. Eric Foreman, Dr. Robert Chase and Dr. Allison Cameron. When House first breaks the news to them, he does it with the intention of getting them to decide among themselves who to let go of.

Cameron comes up with the solution of cutting everyone’s salary to save money, instead of firing someone. But when House pitches the idea to Vogler, he immediately rejects it. House then tells Vogler that he has decided to fire Chase.

1. Does Chase actually get fired?

House doesn’t actually fire Chase because Vogler doesn’t allow it.

Vogler realizes that firing Chase would be a problem because Chase was the one secretly feeding him information on House. Since he couldn’t get Cameron or Foreman to turn against House, he would lose most of his leverage.

Vogler makes House choose someone else, but he refuses. House then figures out the arrangement between Chase and Vogler and when he confronts Chase about it, he admits to his wrongdoings.

But instead of taking any serious actions, House punishes Chase by giving him loads of trivial work.

2. Who ends up leaving the hospital?

Vogler offers House an alternative to firing one of his fellows; he makes House give a talk on a new drug that Vogler’s pharmaceutical company is trying to sell.

This plan however backfires because House takes the opportunity to tell everyone that the expensive new drug is no better than the older formulation it is based on. As a result, Vogler becomes furious, and he approaches the Board on revoking House’s tenure.

Amongst all the chaos, Cameron resigns from the hospital to prevent House from having to make a choice.

Even still, Vogler is persistent on firing House. After two rounds of voting and multiple attempts from Vogler to fire even more doctors, the Board finally agrees to let Vogler go, and they give up his $100 million donation as well.

Once Vogler is out of the picture, House tries to convince Cameron to come back to the hospital. Her only condition is that House must go on a date with her, to which he agrees.

The first season then ends with House not having to lose any of his fellows after all.

3. About House

The series’ main character is Dr. Gregory House, an unconventional, misanthropic medical genius who, despite his dependence on pain medication, leads a team of diagnosticians at the fictional Princeton–Plainsboro Teaching Hospital (PPTH) in New Jersey.  The series’ premise originated with Paul Attanasio, while David Shore, credited as the creator, was primarily responsible for the conception of the title character.

It was filmed mainly in a neighborhood and business district in Los Angeles County’s Westside called Century City. The show received high critical acclaim and was consistently one of the United States highest-rated series.
