Why Fez, The Calm-Headed Guy, Loses His Cool in Euphoria S2 Premiere

Euphoria season 2 opens with a bit of back story on an unexpected yet fan-favorite character – Fezco.

Fans have been vocal about wanting to know more about the character portrayed by Angus Cloud ever since season 1 concluded. In the previous season, Fez had few but quite intense moments. (Anyone still get chills watching the Door scene with Fez and Rue?)

After a 2-year-long wait, season 2 gave us much more of Fez, and from the get-go, we see how his grandmother has had a huge impact on his life. Not to mention him basically living by her ‘words of wisdom.’

Everything Fez does is, in a way, a reflection of his grandma. So, when Rue’s narration, in the beginning, questions how Fez’s grandma would deal with “someone like Nate,” it almost foretells the episode’s ending.

[Spoilers ahead!]

In the season 2 premiere, we see all the main characters gather at a house party for New Year’s Eve. Fez keeps on glaring at Nate from time to time, but you don’t really catch on to it until after he beats him to a pulp. In the final moments, when Fez goes up to him, Nate recalls how Fez had threatened to kill him the next time they met.

True to his words, Fez (almost) does exactly that. But if you were surprised by the sudden attack, a quick refresher of the events of season 1 makes it crystal clear.

Nate, being the insecure bully that he is, makes life hell for a lot of people. Back in s1, when he catfishes Jules and blackmails her with the nudes she sent him, Rue gets involved and wants to scare him for good. Since Rue and Fez are like family, she asks him to threaten Nate so that he backs off.

Fez tells Nate to stay away from Rue and Jules. But yet again, Nate, being the scumbag that he is, anonymously tips cops off about Fez’s drug dealings. To avoid getting caught, Fez has to flush down and get rid of all the stash of drugs he has, which leads to a whole chain of ‘inconvenient’ events for him.

Clearly, Fez has had enough of Nate meddling in everyone’s business. In an interview with GQ, Cloud talked about Fez’s decision to beat up Nate,

Nate

Yeah, he definitely had it coming. It’s well deserved. It was good to read that in the script. I was like, ‘Hell yeah, there you go!’ Snitches get stitches. Code of the streets right there.

Cloud also teased a bit about what’s in store for Fez this season 2,

I’m excited for y’all to see how he kind of comes out of his hard shell a little bit and he kind of exposes his softer side. You see a little bit of his innocence, and you see that he’s kind of been forced into this life, but he’s… What am I trying to say, exactly? He’s still a kid like everyone else. He might be a year older, but he had to act like an adult from such a young age. But his inner kid is still in there, and you get to see it come out slightly.

In case you missed it:

Evidently, Fez spent most of his time talking to Lexi on the sofa this episode and also asks for her phone number – start of a new relationship? Wishful thinking considering how she stared at him in disbelief, stunned to see such a brutal side of a usually laid-back guy.
