What happened to Rachel in Ozark?

Ozark S4 part 1 aired some time ago, preparing to end the series for good, and I’m still reeling from all those unexpected plot twists! While we had to say good bye to quite a few key characters, there were also others that were missing in action this season.

You guessed it right — I’m talking about Rachel, who we haven’t seen on-screen for the longest time! So, what happened to Rachel in Ozark?

Rachel Garrison last appeared in Ozark S2, where Marty helped her get off the FBI’s radar and into a rehab in Miami. As of season 4, she is still theorized to be in Miami.

Now, I did see some confusion online about whether Rachel is dead or alive. After all, she did almost OD after Darlene spiked her. But don’t worry, not only is she alive, but she’s also far, far away from any shady business going on in Ozark.

Here’s what you need to know about Rachel in Ozark season 4:

Why did Rachel not appear in Ozark S4 part 1?

Rachel does appear in Ozark season 3 and her absence continues in S4 part 1 as well. It is theorized that she is still at a rehab center in Miami.

Other than having a brief romantic relationship with Marty, the primary reason the Byrdes were involved with Rachel is because they used her Blue Cat Lounge to first front their money laundering business.

Now that they have moved to other more profitable ventures and discarded the lounge, it seems like they have no use for Rachel being in the picture.

Will Rachel appear in Ozark S4 part 2?

It is unlikely that Rachel will appear in Ozark S4 part 2, or at least not as a big player.

Adding to this, actress Jordana Spiro has not had any active contracts with the show post season 2. (It has not been confirmed if the actress wanted to leave, or her character’s arc just hit its natural end).

But since season 4 will be Ozark’s last, Rachel may come back for a fan-service cameo.

As a character who was duped and then forced into Ozark’s money laundering business, both by the Byrdes and the FBI, Rachel’s presence has always been a liability. Fans speculate that one possible way of bringing Rachel back is by once again having the FBI coerce her into contacting and then betraying Marty.

As someone who sympathizes with Rachel, I think it would be better for her to stay off-screen and in rehab to peacefully deal with all the unsolicited mess she was dragged into.

Recap: Rachel in Ozark S1 & 2

Rachel first appeared in Ozark season 1. Since Marty was looking for a place to establish a new money laundering business, Rachel’s Blue Cat Lodge was a perfect fit. Although Rachel and Marty share feelings for each other, it all goes south when she finds out the true nature of his business.

She agrees to let the Byrdes carry on with their job, but later in the season, she steals some of the laundered cash to get away from Ozark.

In Season 2, Rachel has resorted to substance abuse. Agent Petty uses this his advantage to coerce Rachel into returning to Ozark to spy on Marty. She manages to get enough dirt for the FBI, who try to arrest the Byrdes. But thanks to their lawyer, good ol’ Helen, they manage to walk off scot-free

Rachel ends up confessing to Marty, and during this time Darlene also tries to harm her by spiking her heroin. After she survives in the hospital, Marty devises a plan to keep the FBI off Rachel’s scent and arranges to send her to rehab in Miami. We haven’t heard from her since.
