As John Krasinski’s Jack Ryan readies to bid us adieu, fans of the show are turning to the movies to relive some of the hero’s famous stories. You might notice that even in its cinematic run, the role of Jack Ryan was taken up by quite a few actors. But Harrison Ford’s rendition will always remain a classic!
It is also known that despite the films performing well, Harrison Ford did not continue with the role of Jack Ryan. What caused him to make this decision? Why did he not film a third Jack Ryan film?
Harrison Ford has not given an official reason for stepping away from the Jack Ryan films and not doing a third one. However, it is believed that Ford’s exit was caused due to Tom Clancy’s criticism, filming difficulties, as well as delay in acquiring book rights for a third movie.
There’s much to understand about this situation, so let me lay out the whole picture for you!
The Jack Ryan cinematic universe started with The Hunt for Red October (1990), produced by Paramount, where Alec Baldwin starred as Jack Ryan. Despite its box office success, Baldwin would not continue as Jack, with the role being handed over to Harrison Ford.
Harrison Ford would go on to do two Jack Ryan movies in total, Patriot Games (1992), and Clear and Present Danger (1994). While they were not major hits, they were still well-received by the public.
However, there was a lot more going on behind the scenes. To begin with, there were quite a few filming difficulties and improper screening tests—all of which led to reshoots and production costs increasing unnecessarily.
Then, there was the matter of author Tom Clancy himself, who was not at all happy with how his books were adapted for the screen. To his credit, the plotlines were actually completely changed from what they were in the novels, and this would definitely frustrate the book fans.
Sadly, his disdain did cast a shadow over the production, with Ford even stating once to Entertainment Weekly that Clancy’s criticism did hurt the films.
To add to this, Clancy did not sell the rights to his books all at once and instead opted to do it book by book. So, after Clear and Present Danger, Clancy held off selling the rights to the next book, which meant no movie could be made.
So sadly, by the time Clancy did end up selling the rights again to Paramount, Ford had aged too much to get back into the role. If you look at it, Ford didn’t “leave” the franchise as much as there wasn’t actually a third film for him to return to.
As fans may know, the next Jack Ryan film, Ben Affleck’s Sum of All Fears, would only release eight years later, in 2002. Unfortunately, neither this nor Chris Pine’s 2014 rendition would ever make the infamous CIA analyst last long on the silver screen.

Carlton Cuse and Graham Roland created the series, and Cuse serves as an executive producer alongside John Krasinski, Michael Bay, and Mace Neufeld, among others. Krasinski also stars in the series as the title character.
