Why is Upside Down stuck in 1983 in Stranger Things season 4 volume 1?

Stranger Things season 4 volume 1 had some of the most astonishing revelations about its universe. Be it Vecna’s identity, the return of Dr. Martin Brenner, or even the fact that Hopper is alive.

However, one such fascinating revelation is that Upside Down was stuck in 1983, the day Will Buyers went missing, which happened all the way back in season 1. When Nancy, Steve, Robin, and Eddie enter the Upside Down and go to Nancy’s house searching for guns, they realize this.

Wheeler finds no guns and then sees that the room’s decor is dated and very different from what it is now in the real world. So, she checked her diary and the last entry was on November 6, 1983. This was the day before Will got stuck in the Upside Down.

So, why exactly is Upside Down stuck in 1983?

There is no confirmation on why the Upside Down was stuck in 1983. However, one theory is that Eleven unintentionally projected the real world onto Upside Down.

Dustin had theorized how Upside Down has existed for thousands of years, even before the entire Victor Creel fiasco. It was defined as the mirror dimension which potential existed even before the dinosaurs. But, by its looks, the space is stuck in ‘83.

While there are multiple theories as to why this has happened, two of them have garnered much attention. One theory for this is that when Will unwittingly entered Upside Down, he was a foreign being. Due to this, the space-time continuum within this dimension got disrupted, and it got stuck at that point.

While this sounds like an interesting theory, there’s not much evidence to support it. At least, not yet.

Meanwhile, one Reddit user had another exciting and elaborate theory around this. According to them, the Upside Down is a psychic dimension that was pretty susceptible to the likes of Vecna and Eleven.

Now, throughout the three seasons, we’ve seen the Upside Down bleed into the real world because of the portals being created so often. However, what if Eleven unintentionally became the reason for our world bleeding into the Upside Down.

Eleven opened the first portal when she defeated 001, and then later opened in November 1983, which is how the show began. So, there’s a possibility that the second time around, Eleven felt such strong emotions that it caused a surge of psychic energy and projected our world onto the mirror dimension, like a snapshot.

While this is a wild theory, there are too many variables involved. But, hopefully, the answers will be there for us in Stranger Things season 4, volume 2. So, we just have to wait and find out.
