Over the course of Star Wars Rebels, Ezra and Sabine learned quite a lot. They were the youngest members of the Ghost Crew. Though not romantic, the two grew close to each other and built a strong bond.
So, when the question arises of which Ghost Crew member would stay behind in Lothal, it is undoubtedly Sabine. After all, It was Ezra who helped free Mandalore, Sabine’s homeworld, from the Empire. Sabine wanted to return the favor.
However, Sabine explains that the Empire never returns. And that means Lothal is now Sabine’s home, even if she is likely to lend her hand to the Rebellion during the Galactic Civil War.
In the final message to his friends, Ezra told Sabine that he was counting on her, but the show never explains why.
Why was Ezra counting on Sabine? Sabine understands that Ezra was counting on her to protect Lothal. However, she realizes later that Ezra’s message meant more. Ezra was counting on Sabine to find him, as he is probably still alive somewhere in the galaxy.
So, at the end of the show, Sabine Wren and Ahsoka Tano together take up the mission of finding Ezra Bridger.
I have some explanations for Ezra’s open-ended message and the series finale.
1. Did Ezra Want Sabine to Look for Him?
The most obvious explanation is that Ezra is probably still somewhere in the galaxy. He wanted Sabine to go looking for him.
It is possible that Ezra was planning to sacrifice himself to stop Thrawn from destroying everything. Even if Ezra is not dead, it is what he had in mind or was willing to carry out. But wanting to sacrifice himself does not necessarily make Ezra’s plan a suicide mission. He probably still wanted to be searched for.
Another important question is why Sabine waited for four years before even trying to find Ezra. Well, for firsts, she does not seem to have realized the message meant something more until quite late. Another probable reason is her responsibilities. Sabine was busy trying to reestablish her culture while fighting a large-scale war, which was her first priority back then.
Nevertheless, Sabine and Ahsoka do set off to look for Ezra, wherever in the galaxy he is hiding. This definitely is not the end of Ahsoka and the Ghost Crew’s story. The liberation of Lothal, followed by the defeat of the Galactic Empire was not the end to their missions.
There was another mission to accomplish left—to find Ezra Bridger.
2. Does Sabine Ever Find Ezra?
There are two possibilities to know the answer to this vital question. First, if the makers bring a sequel to Star Wars Rebels. It could also be a spin-off revolving around Ahsoka Tano and Sabine Wren and their search for Ezra Bridger.
The second probability is if we connect the events of The Mandalorian, the spin-off television series that begins five years after Return of the Jedi.
Considering the timeline of The Mandalorian, is it possible that the show could provide some details as to what happened to the search for Ezra? Maybe, Sabine and Ahsoka have already found Ezra, and Ahsoka is now back in The Mandalorian.
The search for Ezra still remains a mystery. While it’s possible that Sabine and Ahsoka were leaving to search for Ezra in the Unknown Regions, it’s just as likely of them trying to reopen the gateway to the World Between Worlds.
Once they do so, they could pull Ezra out of the Star Destroyer right before the jump to hyperspace. Unlike Ezra wanting to pull Kanan from his time of death, removing Ezra wouldn’t change the consequences. The Purrgils would still jump the Star Destroyer and get Thrawn away from Lothal.
This seems to be Sabine’s plan as she looks at her mural. Interestingly, if this is how they plan or manage to get Ezra back, he will not have aged as much as them. That would be strange, but nevertheless a unique possibility. And we can’t wait to find out!
3. About Star Wars Rebels
Star Wars Rebels is a four-season-long animated TV series animated and produced by Lucasfilm Animation. Rebels aired its first episode on October 14, 2014, and follows the story of rebels who make the rebellion happen against The Empire in the Star Wars Universe.
The plot revolves around a team of Rebels and clearly the most unique team combination we have seen in Star Wars so far. The rebel team is led by Jedi Knight Kenan Jarrus and Hera Syndulla – daughter of Cham Syndulla who once fought the Separatists with Jedi Master Windu during the Clone Wars.
We also have an R2D2-style astromech – Chopper, an ex-Mandalorian – Sabine Wren, and a Lasat – Garazeb Orellios. The team’s rebellion starts escalating quickly when they encounter a strong force-sensitive boy, Ezra Bridger on the planet of Lothal.
