Why was The Owl House canceled by Disney?

Last year, “The Owl House” joined a long list of fan-favourite shows being cancelled by network executives. The news met with an obvious criticism from both the fandom and critics.

Featuring Luz and Amity, a same-sex couple in lead roles, The Owl House was praised for its positive representation of the LGBTQ+ community. Its satirical take on some established ways of the world and unique take on life led to the widespread popularity.

Sadly, The Owl House was not renewed by Disney past Season 3. Season 3 was announced to be the last of the series.

The Owl House was canceled by Disney, owing to the executives’ feeling that it did not ‘fit the brand.’ Reportedly, the serialized nature of the show and its unusual setting were the factors that led to its axing. The show will end in 2023 after the finale in S3E3.

What does “not fit the brand” even mean?

Originally, the rumors pointed out that Disney canceled The Owl House due to it daringly featuring LGBTQ+ characters – a first for Disney (it featured a kiss scene between Amity and Luz!). However, the show’s creator, Dana Terrace, has stated in Reddit that the reason behind the cancellation is not its LGBTQ+ support. Neither was it axed due to poor ratings or budget.

The show that garnered much of our appreciation for its unusual take on the world, was canceled for the same reason. Disney also felt that a serialized story flow would not engage the younger audience targeted by the show.

Owl House caters to older child audiences due to its content, and the executive officials at Disney felt that it did not fit the brand. With a world created from the body of a dead god, and demons and monsters like Edalyn and King being an accepted portion of its inhabitants, the show has a very different take on world and life.

Uniquely, the show also satirizes Harry Potter’s magical school of witchcraft and wizardry: a school all the readers of the book series desperately desire to be enrolled in. Presenting it as a place lacking freedom, it shows an ironical view of the famous fantastical school. The show also explores an individual’s identity and the rebellious nature of its characters.

With an unpredictable story that did not let itself conform to expectations and an innovative fantastical world; the show doesn’t stick to the perceived Disney image. Thus The Owl House seemingly has Disney afraid of any negative reviews they might receive from the parents of the intended audience, and the masses at large.

Terrace stated on Reddit that the series misaligned with how some Disney executives sought to portray the company’s brand. Click here to view the Reddit thread.

As the episodes were not standalone, and the story continuously progressed with each episode, Disney felt that it would not grasp the interest and attention of the energetic and volatile minds of the intended age group.

These reasons led to the show’s cancelation by Disney, despite the popular ratings it received and the opposition their decision now faces.

Will The Owl House be Renewed for Season 4?

According to Terrace, the show’s creator, Disney will not renew The Owl House for Season 4. Additionally, no other studio or OTT platform has announced its continuation or reboot.

So, we cannot expect to see The Owl House past Season 3. However, Dana Terrace has encouraged all fans to keep up their love for The Owl House online. Since there has not been official news from the streaming platform yet, we can still keep our hopes up high, as the large-scale appreciation could inspire a change in Disney’s decision.

Season 3 will be the last season of The Owl House as of now. It will complete in 2023.

When did Season 3 of The Owl House release?

Season 3 of The Owl House premiered on October 15, 2022. The remaining two episodes of the season are to be released in 2023.

It will be the final season of Owl House. It will conclude the storyline, and its 46-48 minutes long, three episodes are expected to tie up all the loose ends in the plot.

When will the finale of The Owl House release?

There is no official news yet regarding the release date of The Owl House finale. Episode 3 of Season 3 will sadly be the final episode of the series. It is expected to release a few months into 2023.

The first episode of Season 3 premiered on October 15, 2022. Episode 2 released on Disney+ on 21 January, 2023. The third episode and finale of the show is titled ‘Watching and Dreaming’, and is expected to release soon in the coming months.

Despite not having magical abilities, Luz pursues her dream of becoming a witch by serving as Eda’s apprentice at the Owl House and ultimately finds a new family in an unlikely setting.

The second season, directly following the events of the first season finale, will follow the main protagonists working together to return Luz to the Human Realm, help Eda confront her inner demons, and search for the truth about King’s past.
