Peacemaker Finale Delivers an Underwhelming Bloodbath

Peacemaker’s season finale was full of surprises, and there seems to be a lot more to be explored. Thankfully a season 2 has been confirmed by HBO Max, and all the open-ended arcs might find their closure in the next season.

While the finale had some incredible moments for characters, and the arcs seemed to be written very well, the fight wasn’t as entertaining.

In fact, there was practically not much choreography when it came to the fight scene, and it was merely raining bullets all over.

To give credit where it’s due, James Gunn didn’t try to create a Marvel-like fight sequence but instead chose to depict The Suicide Squad-style action.

We could see blood, flesh, and a whole lot of gore, which made things look ugly, exactly like how the fans would’ve wanted.

But despite all this, the entire experience of watching Peacemaker and the team kill off literally hundreds of butterflies, and the Cow, was bland and underwhelming. Here’s why:

Peacemaker season finale fight was a let-down because it wasn’t intricately choreographed, and one of the main antagonists, the Cow, was killed within a matter of seconds.

Episode 8’s premise was pretty straightforward. Reach the secret hideout of the Cow and destroy it. However, in an episode of 46 minutes, the first 10 to 15 minutes were wasted on jokes and unnecessary gags.

James Gunn could’ve easily dropped the entire Eagly bit and instead spent time on the showdown between Task Force X and the butterflies.

Furthermore, when the characters are fighting, we only see a montage of shots of either Harcourt shooting at incoming people and Vigilante slashing and lacerating the butterflies.

There is no display of well-thought-out strategies that the team required, considering they were short-handed, without Murn on their side.

To top it all, the giant Cow is killed with just one short command; just two words – ‘Activate Torpedo’. When a show creates suspense around any character for more than three episodes, we should get a pay-off that genuinely complements the build-up.

However, with the Cow’s killing, it looked as if James Gunn was steering away from this concept on purpose, and he wouldn’t have any of the classic action sequence tropes in his show.

Unfortunately, the finale doesn’t do much for the viewers who expected an action-packed send-off to all these fantastic characters.
