Crazy Rich Asians 2: Michelle Yeoh Explains Why There’s No News of a Sequel

Crazy Rich Asians was one of Hollywood’s more culturally rich rom-com dramas. Despite the film’s grand success at the box office and among critics, no new sequels have reached the production stage in the last five years.

Based on Kevin Kwan’s novel of the same name, the film was guaranteed to have one or two sequels. Considering its spectacular performance at the box office, WB’s noted satisfaction about it, and the fact that Kwan has two other books in store for furthering the film series.

While a spinoff of Gemma Chan’s character was confirmed in May 2022, no news has followed about a potential Crazy Rich Asians 2. Speaking to Variety, Michelle Yeoh, who played the affluential matriarch of the Young family, explained the cause for this delay.

They have been talking about it. I think sometimes it’s hard, you know, when you have such a big success, and you go, ‘How do I better? And that’s the biggest chip on the shoulder, is like, ‘Do I make it better? Bigger? This? That? I think they are trying to find the right story. Kevin Kwan is endless with his stories.

While this update is disappointing, there’s a silver lining! Even though the process is moving at a snail’s pace, her statement at least confirms that the sequel is still in active development, and she and her co-stars are willing to bring more of Kwan’s stories to life.

Warner Bros. is obviously happy moving forward with the property since they recently okayed a spinoff and want two sequels based on Kwan’s other books about the Chu-Young love story. Though the cast has been busy with other projects during these five years, they’ve repeatedly stated their excitement to return for Crazy Rich Asians 2.
