The Resurrection of Daenerys: Possibility or wishful thinking?

In the Game of Thrones finale, Drogon took Dany’s body and flew off to some unknown destination, after Jon Snow killed her. Although the series did not confirm where exactly Drogon was taking her, subtle hints were left by the makers.

Samwell Tarly mentioned towards the end of the finale that Drogon was last seen flying eastwards, towards “Volan”, before he was interrupted by Ser Bronn. From Sam’s comment, it’s clear that he meant Volantis, the place where Daenerys and Viserys lived after the death of their father, Aerys Targaryen.

We see Dany and Viserys in Volantis back in Season 1. It is also believed that the Red Priestess, Kinvara, is based in Volantis. Drogon flying toward Volantis with Dany’s body could mean he is taking her back to where she began, but it could also be a subtle hint toward a possible resurrection.

As of now, Game of Thrones has ended and there’s no chance of Daenerys being resurrected in a new season. However, she may be resurrected in other spinoffs of the HBO series, if at all Drogon took her to the Red Priestesses.

1. Why Drogon Took Daenerys to Volantis

Drogon took Dany to Volantis because it is where she lived with her brother at the beginning of the series. So, it could be the right place to bury her. He might also have hopes of resurrecting her with the help of the Red Priestess Kinvara.

Daenerys and Drogon

Red Priestess Kinvara was seen for a brief period in Game of Thrones Season 6, where she wanted to offer her services to Daenerys. We do not see her after Season 6, but since the Red Priestesses seem to have supported Dany’s claim to the Iron Throne, Drogon might be taking her to them in hope of help.

As we know, the Red Priestesses, or followers of the Lord of Light, supported Dany because they assumed her to be Azor Ahai. In the books, Maester Aemon confirms that the prophecy that mentioned Azor Ahai did not state any gender of the “Prince” that was promised.

The Red Priests have the power of resurrection. It was Melisandre who managed to resurrect Jon Snow, so it is definitely possible for Dany. However, even though it is possible, I highly doubt that it is likely.

2. Can Daenerys be resurrected?

The Red Priests believe and support Dany for two reasons. Firstly, they believe her to be Azor Ahai reborn, according to the prophecy. Secondly, Volantis and the Red Priests consist of many former slaves, and Dany is a hero for slaves because of her beliefs about the abolishment of slavery.

So, the Red Priests have enough cause to support Dany. This brings us to the important question—will they resurrect her? If Kinvara is indeed in Volantis, there is a fair chance that she could agree to try her hand at it.

After all, when a dragon brings their mother in, it is hard to not listen. Besides, the Red Priests would be happy to resurrect Dany. However, since we’re not getting any more seasons of Game of Thrones, there’s no chance of the story continuing. So, Dany’s resurrection remains wishful thinking.

3. Can Drogon bring Daenerys back to life?

While dragons do have a deep emotional connection with their mothers, especially in the case of Daenerys and Drogon, there’s not much chance of Drogon alone being able to bring Dany back to life.

Drogon

Neither the books nor the series mentions anything about dragons having resurrection powers, so Drogon alone cannot bring Dany back to life. However, Drogon can definitely take her somewhere where she can be resurrected, which he most likely did.

As I mentioned earlier, Drogon most likely took Dany to Volantis, where Kinrava the Red Priestess lives, in hopes of getting her to resurrect Dany. When you have a dragon asking you for something, it is bold to say no.

So, if Drogon wants, he can definitely take Dany to places where resurrection is possible, even if he does not have the power to do it himself.

4. Will Daenerys be resurrected in House of the Dragon?

There is no confirmation of Daenerys appearing in House of the Dragon. It is also heavily unlikely, especially in the first few seasons, since HOTD is a prequel to Game of Thrones and set 1000 years before the events of GoT.

House of the Dragon might focus on the generation of Aerys Targaryen or the Mad King, but it will happen in the later seasons, if at all. It is too early to hope for Daenerys’ appearance in the series.

Even if Dany’s father makes an appearance, we will only see a baby Daenerys at best. So, there’s no chance of HOTD focusing on what happened after the death of Daenerys in Game of Thrones. It is a very far-fetched and unlikely idea.

5. How likely is it for Daenerys to be resurrected?

I would say Daenerys will not be resurrected on this show, as her death marked an end to the saga of the Iron Throne. I don’t think the makers would want to continue her story, even in other spinoffs, mostly because it would be messy.

Dany’s descent into madness had several signs and hints throughout the series, although I would still argue that it wasn’t the best creative decision. But considering that it’s already established, it seems like Daenerys is dead for good.

Unless, of course, George R. R. Martin decides to finally write the books and give us an alternative ending. Though there’s still hope for that in my delusional mind, I don’t think that is happening anytime soon either.

So, it is very unlikely for Daenerys to be resurrected. It is possible, though. After all, Jon Snow came back to life, But the makers of GoT seem to have been too much in love with Jon Snow, and surely did not and do not hold the same love for the Mother of Dragons. After all, how else would a boring character like Snow get so much prominence in the show despite doing nothing?

Talking about Jon Snow, there’s a spinoff series about him in development at HBO Max. While I couldn’t care less about what he is up to after the ending of Game of Thrones, it is the only series that will be set in that time.

This means that it is the only potential series that could deal with what happened to Daenerys and Drogon after the finale. So, if at all there’s any chance of a Daenerys resurrection, it is this show we should look at.

Nevertheless, I’ll save the bashing for later. As of now, it’s time to wait for House of the Dragon to arrive and impress us. Let’s see.
