James Gunn Might Cast New Actors for His DCEU Run

After months of uncertainty about what the “new” DCEU will be about, creative heads, James Gunn and Peter Safron, have clarified the same in a press conference. The two will be heralding a new era at DC studios, but to do so they have decided to wipe previous DCEU projects from the canon.

As such, fans are eager to know if their favorite actors will return for the new era or not. Will the older DCEU cast be allowed to reprise their roles in new projects? What’s the verdict?

It is unlikely that the previous cast members that played major roles like Superman, Wonder Woman, Batman, etc. will reprise their roles in the new DCEU, as James Gun wants to rewrite the entire Justice League arc and instead start off with the Gods and Monsters era.

In all honesty, James Gunn hasn’t explicitly said that the actors from the previous DCEU projects won’t reappear in the new run.

But all his other statements about what this new era will depict do seem to point in that direction — especially since the plan is to render some of the previous projects void. In order to do this, he will have to bring fresh faces to signify a change in the regime.

Superman

Gods and Monsters is his priority, with DC’s most famous hero, Superman, being Gunn’s first project in the new run. In this regard, he has made certain concrete statements that point to Henry Cavill’s exist.

In particular, he has stated how the Superman Legacy will deal with a younger version of Clark Kent (but not depict his origin story) and as such, will require a different actor. Gunn had also stated last year itself that Cavill was aware of this narrative change, meaning that he knows he wouldn’t be returning as Superman.

If Superman himself is being recast and taken to a different time period, it’s safe to assume that none of the previous cast will reprise their roles either. It’s also unknown at this point whether the actors will be recast in new roles.

Shazam! Fury of the Gods

However, certain projects like Shazam! Birds of Prey, The Suicide Squad, The Flash and Blue Beetle will continue to be canon in the new DCEU — which means their cast will continue to play their roles even in the new era.

Another query that fans had is whether there’s even a small chance that the CW actor may reprise their roles. Sadly, it seems like Warner Bros is completely shutting down the Arrowverse and its adjacent projects. In fact, they have even canceled the HBO Max-led Doom Patrol, which means that we won’t be seeing these actors in the DCEU for the time being.

So, at the moment, it’s a mix bag! A lot of the previous cast won’t return simply because their projects are axed/wiped off, while others will since their projects are still canon. Stay tuned for more news on this front!
